Summary
The Roxtons are back! Romance. Drama. Intrigue. Family secrets. There's never a dull moment for the 18th century's first family.
Widowed and destitute, Lady Mary Cavendish is left with only her pride. Daughter of an earl and great-granddaughter to a Stuart King, family expectation and obligation demands she remarry. But not just any man will do; her husband must rank among the nobility. Falling in love with her handsome and enigmatic neighbor is out of the question. As always, Mary will do her duty and ignore her heart.
Country squire Christopher Bryce has secretly loved his neighbor Mary for many years. Yet he is resigned to the cruel reality they are not social equals, and thus can never share a future together. Never mind that his scandalous past and a heartbreaking secret make him thoroughly unworthy of such a proud beauty.
Then into their lives steps a ghost from Mary's past, whose outrageous behavior has Mary questioning her worldview and Christopher acting upon his feelings, and for all to see. The mismatched couple begin to wonder if in fact love can prevail - that a happily ever after might just be possible if only they dare to follow their hearts.
Fans of the series will also delight in being reacquainted with the fascinating, always surprising, and never ordinary members of the Roxton family.
Part of the highly acclaimed Roxton Family saga.
Non-explicit, mild sensuality

Not the best in the series
What I dislike is the end when it says - they be continued in the next book and then the next book starts a complete new book
Ok - characters reappear- which is charming but it isn’t continuous as one would hope for
This particular book I found weak but beautifully presented!

A Wonderful, Emotional, Exciting Story.
Would you listen to Proud Mary again? Why?
Oh yes I would and will listen to this book again. Why? Because the story is beautiful, the characters believable, the romance palpable, and the narration SMOOTH PERFECTION.
What did you like best about this story?
This book like every other of this author's books, has the perfect amount of the romantic element, yet has excitement from other intrigue, in this instance treason. The era they are set in is wonderful, but there is also a plethora of sub plots that keep you intrigued from beginning to end of each book. There is never a dull moment. The characters are all discussed in-depth, and you can't help but love the good ones, and either pity or despise the bad ones. Mary and Christopher are the perfect loveable characters in this book, and seeing their romance develop was so heart warming.
Which character – as performed by Alex Wyndham – was your favourite?
Such an unfair question because Alex performs each and every character to perfection. I have never heard a narrator that can sound perfect performing every voice from a little girl's voice to a gruff old man's voice. Christopher's voice is deep and sexy, especially during the intimate scenes, but if I have to pick a voice that really impresses me...it would have to be Antonia Roxton. The accent, the femininity, it's just wonderful, and for a man to be the one to peform it to perfection is very impressive.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Absolutely, there were some very emotional parts to this book. Not only ones that made me teary eyed, but there were some fun laugh out load moments too. That's one of the great things about Lucinda Brant's books, they are filled with excellent characters, exciting story lines, and you can't help but run the gamut of emotions throughout. Having Alex perform the book as well adds that extra element, he makes each emotional scene that little more real and believable. I can't say enough good things about the perfect pairing of a Lucinda Brant book with Alex Wyndham as it's narrator.
Any additional comments?
Never say no to listening to a book by Lucinda Brant narrated by Alex Wyndham. It's a partnership too good to miss.

Another five star classic from the brilliant Lucinda Brant
The Roxton series continues with Proud Mary and doesn't disappoint. Add to the wonderful writing and story line the amazing voice of Alex Wyndham, Proud Mary is another 'can't stop listening to' audiobook. The ongoing story of Antonia and her family just gets better and leaves you wanting more. Eagerly awaiting the next instalment with Satyrs Son and so hoping there's still more to follow.

Superb addition to the Roxton family saga
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is a wonderful addition to the Roxton family saga. Telling the story of ‘proud’ Mary Cavendish, who has been left destitute by her oafish and selfish husband, Sir Gerald, and her neighbour Christopher, the local Squire. It is a delicate and beautifully wrought love story set in the Cotswolds.
The beauty of Ms Brant’s writing is in the detail. Her research is incredible, the descriptions of the Cotswolds are so accurate and with fabulous little details – a name check for Smeaton, and Smeaton’s Tower in Plymouth (one of my favourite places) being one such example. I live in the Cotswolds, and I am in awe of Ms Brant for the intricacy of her research – I can picture (and know) many of the places described in the book, and listened with delight, picturing the scenes in my mind’s eye.
The characters are so well drawn, all with many layers and complexities which are peeled away through the art of storytelling and the wonderful narration by Alex Wyndham (which is second to none). Each character is easily identifiable, and so easy to picture.
The Roxton saga introduces new characters, and reintroduces many of my favourites, with nods back to previous books and little snippets which the avid reader will delight in. The delight in realising Kate is a friend to Antonia, Dowager Duchess of Roxton in the very first Roxton book, and knowing that this little seed had been planted so long ago is a testament to the degree of complexity in the novels. I am in awe of the planning that must go into this series, every detail is necessary and all hooks together so incredibly with the vocal characterisation of Alex Wyndham. It is comforting, and feels like catching up with old friends. Every book I listen to in this series I fear that I won’t enjoy it as much as the last, and every time I am pleasantly surprised that Ms Brant has indeed done it again!
This is a five-star book. I wish I could give it more. I’m already listening for a second time to find more of those little touches that Ms Brant weaves in so well.
What does Alex Wyndham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Alex Wyndham is an exceptionally talented narrator. He is able to bring to life any character, from ten year old girl to French Duchess. You can vividly picture any character he portrays.
