About this listen

When the Marquis of Amberley's coach is waylaid by highwaymen and his coachman shot, he is forced to take shelter at the first house he finds and is subsequently trapped there for a week by a severe snowstorm.

Oakleigh Manor is the home of Rosalind Vernon who lives alone but for her devoted servants and an ill-natured parrot, cut off from the outside world by the tragic result of a childhood accident. But Rosalind is brave and bright and totally devoid of self-pity - and it is these qualities which, as the days pass and the snow continues to fall, touch Amberley's heart.

On his return to London, the Marquis persuades Rosalind's brother, Philip, to bring her to town for a taste of society, despite her handicap. But the course of Amberley's courtship is far from smooth. Philip Vernon actively dislikes him; Rosalind appears to be falling under the spell of the suavely elegant Duke of Rockliffe; and worse still, Amberley is haunted by a dark and terrible secret that, if revealed, may cause him to lose Rosalind forever.

Oh Nick, you darling man

I have listened to this so many times. Today I decided, because I miss them, that I would listen through the series from start to finish. Again.

I think to this day Dominic and Rosalind are probably the best suited couple of all of a Stella Riley’s couples (perhaps excluding Justin and Abigail). That’s not to say the other couples aren’t wonderful, because they really always are... but that the Parfit Knight felt much more about two parts of a whole that finally come together. And where there are overtones of that soul mate love between Adeline and Rock, Nick and Rose are just so wonderfully the same person. It’s so refreshing.

Also the opening scene of the first chapter is such impeccable scene setting, especially when you think about how this would have been Riley’s first foray into the Georgian period. She paints it impeccably: all the men watching on in disdain at White’s in all their metrosexual glory as Dominic fleeces Robert of 3k. So perfect.

I love this book. I love this series. I love Stella Riley and I Love Alex Wyndham.

Spend your credit and listen to this book and the entire series! Also don’t make my mistake and read them out of order. It’s so much better if you meet Rock this way (in book 2), and read it in order!

Perfection

Loved the story. Beautifully written and great sense of period. Alex Wyndham brings the characters to vivid life. And then there's Broody.....

Beautiful story and excellent narration

I was prompted to buy this audiobook after exhausting the Georgette Heyer’s, which are my go-to relaxing reads. I was worried it might be a little ‘Mills and Boon’, but it was a lovely surprise and has become one of my favourites! The lead characters are particularly endearing, and the arc of the story never fails to keep you hooked. After being hugely disappointed by the hit-and-miss narration of some of the Heyer books, I can’t recommend Alex Wyndham enough. He has a strong voice which is very adaptable, and his interpretation of the book is spot on. Thoroughly recommend!

Very very good indeed

I have read the print version of 'the Parfit Knight' many, many times, but only recently embarked on the audible version, narrated by the very talented Alex Wyndham. From the opening lines, I was totally immersed in the story-telling and have great admiration for the many different voices, accents, nuances and male and female voices - including Broody the parrot - that Alex Wyndham brings to Stella Riley's wonderful writing. Another reviewer, writing about Alex Wyndham, said something along the lines that one forgets that one is listening to only one person when you are listening to his narration - and I think that is probably the highest praise for a narrator, entirely deserved.

I loved it.

Light hearted entertainment

I enjoyed the interplay between the characters.
The restrictions on women is clearly displayed, but the point is made, despite them women could succeed.
I think always when I read these books, is the boredom that exists in their lives, leading to a lot of stupidity, and spoilt behaviour.
