Summary

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Pop Goes The Weasel - the furiously fast-paced new thriller from M. J. Arlidge, read by Elizabeth Bower.

The body of a middle-aged man is discovered in Southampton's red light district - horrifically mutilated, with his heart removed. Hours later - and barely cold - the heart arrives with his wife and children by courier.

A pattern emerges when another male victim is found dead and eviscerated, his heart delivered soon afterwards.

The media call it Jack the Ripper in reverse; revenge against the men who lead sordid double lives visiting prostitutes. For Grace, only one thing is certain: There's a vicious serial-killer at large who must be halted at all costs....

Gripping!

Well crafted plot with a few surprising twists and turns making characters believable. Good narration too which makes or breaks an audio book.

A good read

Another good read from Elizabeth Bower. Tension slowly builds and you get to feel as though you know the characters.

A worthy successor to the first book

This book stands alone, but it carries on with the characters from the first novel I enjoyed it more I think because it was less bleak and gory than the first.

Thrilling

I really enjoyed this book.
It nicely picked it up from the first book but doesn't repeat the same story. Mystery and suspense built throughout, with revaluation of 'who done it' nicely placed within the last few chapter.

Overall I think this is excellent crime book, the character make you question your own views and options, which change throughout as you learn more about the story and their roles within it.

If you like a murder mystery with honesty this is your book and so far series.

Very good

Excellent boo. So many twists and turns it was impossible to second guess how it would end. Kept me enthralled right to the end. Bought the next book and can't wait to start.

Not entirely plausible

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not for me; there's a strong plot with plenty of twists and turns, but I just can't take to DI Helen Grace. I've listened to the first book and gave this, the second in the series a try. I find reference to 'superiors' grating. It doesn't work entirely well as a police procedural and DI Grace just seems too off the wall to be plausible. Dropping off the scene in the middle of the enquiry on her motorbike and visiting Jake for questionable 'therapy' just doesn't gel. I'm not keen on any of her team. There's no sense if camaraderie or interaction. The plot's gripping enough but somewhat far fetched.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Couple of unexpected twists in the plot held my attention. Was uninterested in the fortunes of a couple of the sidekicks.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Narration is ok, with a range of voices for the characters, but some of the accents were rather flat and irritating.

Did Pop Goes the Weasel inspire you to do anything?

Nope. I've given the series a fair run, but I won't be looking for any more.

Any additional comments?

Well written, but almost trying too hard to be exciting.
