About this listen

Perfect People is a compelling and thought-provoking thriller from bestselling Peter James.

John and Naomi are grieving the death of their four-year-old son from a rare genetic disorder. They desperately want another child, but they realize the odds of their next child contracting the same disease are high.

Then they hear about geneticist Dr Leo Dettore. He has methods that can spare them the heartache of ever losing another child to any disease.

At his clinic is where their nightmare begins.

They should have realized something was wrong when they saw the list. Choices of eye colour, hair, sporting abilities. They can literally design their child. Now it's too late to turn back. Naomi is pregnant and already something is badly wrong . . .

Perfect People...not a perfect book.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as I though I would judging by most of the book reviews I read. The premise of the book was interesting and the story was reasonably well thought out. The narrator's natural voice was strong and clear but I wasn't too keen on her "male" voice.
My main criticisms of the book are as follows.
- I was left with too many unanswered questions by the end.
- Supporting characters appeared suddenly and disappeared just as quickly
- The conclusion of some plotlines fizzled out instead of reaching an explosive climax
- In some situations, the behaviour of John and Naomi seemed a bit out of character.

Despite this, the book kept me listening avidly until the end and I found the conclusion satisfying. This was the first book of Peter James that I listened to but unfortunately, it would not prompt me to rush into downloading some of his other work anytime soon.

Fantastic story

Fantastic story, especially how the story end. The narrator is good. It is one of my favourite audible books.

Strong plot weak characters

I always eagerly anticipate a new Peter James novel. Good ideas and strong character development. This was a great disappointment, The book is strong on concept and plot to the determent of the characters. Indeed there are really only two characters, a couple of parents who on good days are schizophrenic and on bad days suffer multiple personality disorder. Both are presented as intelligent educated people but have about as much basic common sense and personal skills as . . . well something that has neither. I struggled to the end of the book because of the story line but it took great willpower not to turn the player off every time John opened his mouth. The reader was very good and I would happily listen to her again but I feel that some of the problem lay with her voice characterisation of John.

OMG Just amazing!!!

One of the deciding fact on picking this book was the narrator Clare Corbett, who I have enjoyed books read by her in the past, she just seems to bring a book to life for me!
But this book is amazing, the most enjoyable book I have had before from Audible and I have to admit I never was able to guess which direction this book was going to go in, great twists and turns. Please please stick with this book, little slow at first, amazing writing, have already recommended this book on Audible to several family and friend today. Two have purchased it already.

Enjoyed but

The author used the words “squeezed a hand” about every 10 minutes and the scenes where the mother asked where her children were lasted too long, too loud and named the children every minute at screaming pitch.

Brilliant narration!

A fabulous, twisted tale perfectly narrated. Peter James just never fails. I had to sit in silence after it had finished, taking it all in.

Would make a fantastic film….

Absolutely brilliant book by Peter James and not one of his brilliant Roy Grace series - it was a gripping listen from start to finish and would make a marvellous film - highly recommended.

I loved this title! And the narrator is brilliant

Would you consider the audio edition of Perfect People to be better than the print version?

I never tried the printed version so I couldn't comment

What other book might you compare Perfect People to, and why?

The girl on the train - very gripping - cliff hanger moments - end of some chapters make you gasp with shock

Which character – as performed by Clare Corbett – was your favourite?

The children - Luke & Phoebe

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending - I felt an anti-climax coming but the last 10 minutes of the book is heart fluttering and emotional

Any additional comments?

I loved this book. I find Clare the narrator really easy to follow as I first experienced her in the girl on the train. Brilliant story - I wouldn't say farfetched but definitely different. Heart pounding, cliff hanging and exciting.
