About this listen

Fans of Agatha Raisin, Miss Marple, and Midsomer Murders are loving the latest English village sleuth.

When a climber suspiciously falls to his death and a local artist has her dog stolen, both cases fall into the lap of local sleuth, Patricia Fisher...and so starts an adventure that will see her travel the world.

Far from being your average woman, Patricia Fisher lives in a 73-room manor house and travels with a Jamaican butler who is part ninja and fakes his Downton Abbey accent. How these things came about is a story in itself, yet far from embracing the quiet English village life - playing croquet on the lawn and eating cucumber sandwiches - Patricia pokes her nose where it is most definitely not wanted and finds herself being shot at rather more often than one ought reasonably to expect.

But as she closes in on the bad guys in each case, it’s clear there is someone operating in the background, someone who has taken offence for crimes previously solved and they plan on getting revenge at any cost. Join her and an enticing cast of friends as they tackle mystery after mystery and get into hot water with criminals, gangsters, and the police. What Sam Knew is the first in a follow-on series from Patricia’s successful Cruise Mystery series Books in that series:

  • The Missing Sapphire of Zangrabar
  • The Kidnapped Bride
  • The Director’s Cut
  • The Couple in Cabin 2124
  • Dr Death
  • Murder on the Dancefloor
  • Mission for the Maharaja
  • A Sleuth and Her Dachshund in Athens
  • The Maltese Parrot
  • No Place Like Home

Great story. Terrible narrator

I ended up having to read the books as the narrator thoroughly spoil it. The pronunciation of "fete" really made me cringe. Just awful!!

oh dear

I will read the books myself. The narration is dreadful and off putting.
I am sure the stories are great, but why use an American narrator if Patricia is from Kent, certainly never heard Kent local speaking like that.

Great Story. Shame about the narrator

I love these books and have been looking forward to listening to the audio version. What a massive disappointment when I heard the narrator. She is American doing a cod version of British accents. Her version of Jermaine’s accent is a west African one - not the cultured English one in the books. Not even a reasonable Jamaican accent.

She doesn’t know how to pronounce so many English words DownTOWN Abbey not DownTON. FET instead of Fête, and so many others. Such a shame!

I won’t be buying any more books narrated by this person.

Oh Steve Higgs! Just..Why?!

The books are brilliant but the audiobook is completely ruined by the actress they chose to narrate them. Ridiculous accent ( the main character was once a cleaner, not a grand Duchess!!), and her ‘clipped Style’ is ludicrous and makes it very difficult to follow.
Sorry but having read every book in the series; this audible box set was a complete waste of time and money.

Appalling narration.

I enjoyed Patricia Fisher cruise mysteries although the constant change of narrators was annoying. Then started on this series expecting another fun run! I have finally given up on this first book (which is annoying as I have purchased the “box set” as I just can’t stand the narrator’s interpretation. I don’t understand why audible would be happy with the narration. It is stupid, totally unbelievable, and irritating in the extreme. Clearly the narrator is American, which isn’t a problem, if only she’d use her normal voice instead of trying for a British accent which just doesn’t work …. On any level. It is impossible to listen to and I’m now reading the books. Make sure you “sample” this series before you buy to ensure you can actually listen to this narrator for any length of time!! Chapter four was my limit!!

Terrible narration

If I had read the reviews first I never would have started this series. Speaking American in a weird English accent, mispronounced words, eventually I started to get used to it then the Swiss accent was introduced, awful.

Wonderful Stories, Terrible Narration

The stories are in themselves a lot of fun, but the narrators voice is difficult to listen to.

An average book made worse by an inappropriate narrator

This box set was nowhere near as good as the Rex Harrison series by the same author, but it was ‘lightweight’ listening and amusing at times.
Unfortunately it was rather spoiled by choosing an American narrator to depict posh British people in a quintessential English setting. Her English accent was terrible and she seemed only to be able to do it by putting on a silly high pitched voice (but it still wasn’t good). I would readily listen to this narrator voicing an American novel but it didn’t work here.

Patricia Fisher”s Mystery Adventures

This box set of classic cosy mysteries is sadly ruined by a poor narration with the strangest of accents and delivery
