Summary
Outlander, Diana Gabaldon's landmark novel of Scottish lore, has captured the hearts of millions of listeners around the world and catapulted her to the top of the New York Times best seller list.
Intrigue, danger, and desire merge in this lush novel of loyalty and time travel.
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone ruins and is instantly transported to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans - in 1743.
Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser? Davina Porter's lyrical narration will launch listeners into an exhilarating world of heroism, pulse-pounding adventure, and breathtaking romance as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

Lose yourself in a gripping story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Being a bloke I was looking for a nice time travel adventure but I soon got caught up in the thrills and spills of highland life without missing the real reason for choosing the book. The first couple of chapters drag a bit but keep close attention as they make historic references picked up later on. I was fascinated and enthralled!

well worth listening to
I was never sure about reading audiobooks until an injury meant that I couldn't hold a book to read. So I bought Outlander a historical novel - has wrongly been labelled a romantic fiction - should be relabelled as a historical fiction, I enjoyed in paper form but listening to it on Audiobook really really makes a difference, Davina Porter (the narrator) has a natural gift at bringing the various characters to life. I absolutely love this book, so much so that I rave about it to all my friends and I have listened to the book on more than one occassion. I would definitely recommend it.

an awsome read!
I wish I could give this book 6 out of 5. Truly wonderful. Historical fighting, love, scottish history, passion. I thought it sounded a bit strange from the blurb, and only got it because I wanted a really long book to go away with. I had to get the next installment straight away! I just couldn't wait.

Applaud Writer and Narrator
I found this book to be so enjoyable and the characters really bring the story alive. I must say the book is fantastic but you have to listen with Davina Porter narrating as she is great with the difference voices and accents that she draws you in, it would not be the same without her. I coudn't put my Ipod down at times and even sneaked to listening while at work. I have never done this with any other book. Will now be going through all the books in the series.

Narrator mispronounces everything!! However, book is amazing
The book is amazing, but the narrator mis-pronounced a lot of words! Extremely frustrating, especially as I am Scottish.

Treat to come
Once started on this series it is a serious committment as all Diana Gabaldon's books are long.
She is very wordy, but hold out for the unabridged versions as you miss so much otherwise.
The time proximity of Culloden and the American War of Independence allow for her putting her characters in some very interesting situations. Sometimes you get rather fed up with all the detail of child rearing in very basic conditions, but it is worth persevering.
The series is very well read and I have looked forward to each book. The unabridged versions should all be available soon as I understand that there were contractual obligations that expire after 10 years.

Beautifully written and beautifully narrated
Davina Porter has done an amazing job of bringing one of my favourite novels to life. The distinct voices (and spot-on accents) she gives to both the English and Scots characters are perfect, and if anything, I think I enjoyed listening to the story more than reading it for myself.
My only slight criticism is of the recording itself. In many places I could hear talking and laughter in the background, as though the narrator was inside a building with busy crowds outside her room. A number of times I actually paused my iPod thinking the sound came from nearby, only for the chatter to disappear with the audiobook. It is only slight, but there nevertheless.
If, like me, you are listening to audiobooks at work or in a car where there is already background noise to some extent, it would be unlikely to trouble you. However, if you like stories at bedtime, in the quiet, it may be more noticeable and irksome.
I am buying all the other Diana Gabaldon books narrated by Davina Porter - and although the last two in the series are not currently available, I hope they soon will be.

Narrator is a bit thick
Great story but really wish the narrator had actually looked up or asked about the pronunciations before she arrogantly read the book like a completely uneducated idiot. She can’t even pronounce plaid properly, let alone the names! Her french is appalling too.
She also sounds a bit old to play a young woman and she also doesn’t keep accents straight in her own head so often Claire sounds very odd.
She should have taken her time to research first. This spoils the experience.
Very very lazy of the producers not to check al of this or update the recording.

Absolutely Loved it!!
Beautiful love story, Davina narrates very well.Enjoyed listening as much as reading it, perhaps even more so, so relaxing you just drift off into another time & place, it's like you're actually in the story
