Summary
The crew of an oceanic research vessel goes missing in the Pacific along with their mini submarine.
An evangelical media star holds a rally next door to a cinematic convention in LA. The cops know there's going to be trouble, but what they didn't foresee was the presence of a Glaswegian photographer with an indecipherable accent and a strong dislike of hypocrisy or of a terrorist who seems to have access to plutonium as well as Semtex.

A brilliant Brookmyer book
Having listened all Chris Brookmyer's recent offerings I was excited when more of his earlier books were released on audio this book certainly didn't disappoint. A great mix of suspense and dark humour, the story underlined by his distaste for the hipocracy of organised faith and those who abuse it's power for their own ends. Well written and well read. A fast paced and very enjoyable listen.

Great story despite poor Scottish accent
I agree with the other reviewers that the Scottish accent was bizarre and I nearly stopped listening but glad I didn't. When I had got used to the main character's accent it became quite endearing and I'm glad I listened to the whole thing. I'm a great fan of Christophers Brookmyre's books and the Angus King read ones are fantastic but still glad I persevered with this one.

Great story, and I know a Scots accent is hard to do...
The story is fabulous, and the narrator was generally really good, but an American trying to do Scots? Too hard I think.

Relevant for all times and religions
insightful look at the rational of extremists who use religion as their calling card and who can't love a Motherwellian take on LA.

Classic CB Mix of Thriller and Humour
I really enjoyed this, an interesting look into why many Americans are easily led by some of the more manipulative Christian ‘extremists’. I see this still playing out.
At times chortling along as I listen, classic Brookmyre, with the background stories of the characters fleshed out intermittently between the action. Although set in America, our hero is of course Scottish.

Excellent story, abysmal Scottish accent
Brookmyre's books are always irreverent, sharply wry and very funny, and this one is no exception. However, as a Scot, the accent put on by the American narrator was so awful as to be an insult - badly pronounced slang, little comprehension of how the slang should sound and no discernible area of Scotland represented - it certainly wasn't Lanarkshire!

Great fun
Spoke in the eye with a sharp stick for world religions. A chance for two previously minor characters to expand and shine

Waving not drowning
Like other reviewers I thought the Scottish accent was very odd and took a lot of getting used to. I will normally quite happily revisit audiobooks I've listened to before (saves me money!) but the odd accent makes this an audiobook I'm unlikely to revisit despite enjoying the story.
The story itself is irreverent and funny with intrigue aplenty.

Not his best book
Normally love Christopher Brookmyre, but this book was a bit of a slog. A lot of religious talk and not much missing submarine, and sorry to say the narrator has the worst Scottish accent since Scotty in Star Trek. As a native Scott, its very difficult to listen to. I'd recommend other books than this one especially if this is your introduction to CB.

Typical Brookmyre
Finally I’ve got round to this and, whilst very dated now, enjoyed it hugely. The characterisation and settings were great but spoiled by probably the worst attempt at a Scottish accent I’ve ever heard! I’ll put that down to irony. Or something. Overall, another CB ticked off my list and another enjoyable listen!
