Summary

Few kidnap victims grow up to become police officers - but this is exactly what Nina Foster did.

Following a frenzied stabbing she is drafted into her first murder investigation. With former rescuer DCI Stan McGuire as her mentor and John ('Wingsy') Wing as her partner, she thrives on the pace and banter that go with the job.

As the body count increases and the force's biggest-ever manhunt gets underway, Nina is determined to find the murderer. But when the story of her own traumatic childhood comes to light - a past she's worked hard to hide - her role on the team is threatened.

Suddenly her job, her peace of mind and her safety are all in danger. And this time DCI Stan McGuire won’t be there to save her. Fast-paced, and with a shocking twist, this compelling crime debut by police insider Lisa Cutts takes us to the heart of the Major Incident Room - introducing a gutsy new heroine to the crime scene.

Lisa Cutts is the daughter of a former Metropolitan police officer and obtained her first degree in Law before becoming a police officer herself in 1996. She later achieved a second degree in Applied Criminal Investigation. She lives with her husband, a retired Police Officer, in Kent, where she balances working full-time for Kent Police with writing crime fiction.

An extract from Never Forget won the Myriad-West Dean Writer's Retreat Competition in 2012.

Critic reviews

"Never Forget does what crime fiction has never managed to do before - to take the reader directly to the fast-beating heart of a police investigation. Lisa Cutts has a unique voice, one that resonates with the knowledge of years of police work - and in DC Nina Foster, she has created a character so genuine and honest that she feels like your best friend. Never Forget is a complex, chilling and brilliantly clever debut that keeps you guessing to the final, thrilling sentence." (Elizabeth Haynes)
"The action is fast and well-paced, the characters interesting and believable and the storytelling is gripping. Lisa Cutts is a talented writer and she brings to life the reality of the Major Incident Room." (Lisa Reads Books)

Overly complex and character development limited

Would you try another book written by Lisa Cutts or narrated by Deryn Edwards?

I really looked forward to reading this book because it was written by a serving police officer; I thought the procedural detail would be accurate and that there should be a reality about the story. Unfortunately this was not a happy listening experience and I struggled to get to the end.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lisa Cutts again?

The police procedural information was accurate but the overly complex nature of the story detracted from its enjoyment. For me, I found the story leaped about from one character to another without having created sufficient context and identity for each person to retain my interest. This meant I had to shuffle back and forth, on occasions, to remind myself of how some of the individuals fitted into the story. I think this lack of character identity resulted from the fact that most of the story was contained in conversation between the characters without underpinning knowledge of their beliefs, feelings or background.

Did Deryn Edwards do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Because so much of the story was contained in conversation rather than narrative, it was important to have the book read by a narrator who could use different accents and intonation. Deryn Edwards made a reasonable job of differentiating each character although her interpretation of a South African accent was unlike any I'd heard before!

Any additional comments?

I found the account of the relationship which was starting to develop between main character 'Nin' and one of the uniform constables distracting from the principal story threads because it was written so tritely. The best part of the writing for me was some of the humour used by police officers in the story which I did find reminiscent of some heard in my own years of police service.

Pure Joy!!

If you could sum up Never Forget in three words, what would they be?

Witty,believable,enjoyable

What was one of the most memorable moments of Never Forget?

The truth in the way Lisa describes Nina's lack of concentration when having to give a report whilst trying to to keep an eye on the fast disappearance of the Pizza. You can just see it happening before your eyes.

Have you listened to any of Deryn Edwards’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Never listened to any of Deryn's other performances, however I found this performance really well done, I have just bought the second book Remember Remember as I find I can put Deryn on my list of excellent readers, up there with Saul Reichlin, Paul Thornley, Steven Pacey, Jane McDowell and Caroline Lennon

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thought it was lovely how when Stan told her of his imminent surgery she was straight by his side, and how she still had the respect to allow his daughter to take charge. Sometimes when reading books similar to this, the heroine can come across too in your face and self centred, however in my opinion Lisa has got Nina Just right.

Any additional comments?

I just loved this book from the off, the banter between Wingsy and Nin was just superb, the way her drinking was described and her relationship with Bill starts!!!
If I didn't know better I'd have thought Lisa wrote this book for me.

Interesting

This would have been so much better to listen to if the narrator had not rushed through it as though she was running late for a bus.

Entertaining British crime procedural

Never Forget is a really original and highly entertaining British crime procedural. It is written by an actual police officer, and it showed. The investigative work is described in great detail. The plot was logical and totally believable, and the characters were realistic. I couldn't believe that this was really the first book written by Lisa Cutts. The other thing I really appreciated was the fact that although the main character had suffered traumatically in her childhood, she was not being portrayed as the stereotypical troubled sufferer. Ok, she drinks and has boyfriend issues, but who doesn't. Still, she appears a lot more "ordinary" than your average fictional crime fighter. That made it different, and I really liked it. Another nice touch was the humor and witty banter between the characters. My one criticism would be the amount of people that were involved in the intricate plot. At times, it became confusing to keep up with the different relationships. But as this is the first in a series, I can see that it made sense to introduce all the recurring characters in depth.
The audiobook is competently narrated by Deryn Edwards. When I finished it, I bought book 2 straightaway.
