Summary
Arnold Landon can’t help but feel drawn to Oldham Manor, an atmospheric medieval house in the middle of nowhere.
When he is invited to catalogue the library there, he jumps at the chance. The place is a maze of musty old papers and books.
And that’s not all. Late one night, he stumbles on a secret passage, twisting deep under the ground. Where will it take him? And why was it walled up?
When a stranger turns up dead in a ditch, Landon begins to realize that someone is watching his every move. And they have a plan to ensure the past stays buried for good.
What did the victim know that was worth killing for?

I LOVE this series!
I am only two books in but I LOVE this series! Lewis's writing is intelligent, hilarious and, most importantly, discusses history in a completely new way for me. Also, as I mentioned in my previous reviews of both the Eric Ward series and this series, I am in awe of Lewis's ability to make areas I considered mind-numbingly boring (merchant banking, shipping legal issues, planning permissions, land disputes) breathtakingly fascinating.
"Murder in the Manor" is another excellent mystery full of twists and turns and fascinating historical details.

Great story and masterful description of medieval construction
I would really recommend this serial. It’s well composed and with great insights into medieval construction and master crafts. Good plot and very well paced narration.

Very enjoyable
I now find myself warming to the boring Arnold Landon, he’s certainly more interesting than the chief planning officer. Steven Crossley outstanding as usual.
Now for book 3 in the series. So glad not to have been put off by the poor reviews.

Story.... a different slant on murder mysteries.
I like the very understated, but deep thinking, down to earth soul that is Arnold Landon.. Historical facts to learn from an unusual, inquisitive man lacking in formal education but endowed with deep understanding of natural materials, and their place in beautiful buildings. Loving this series by Roy Lewis

Dreadful
Gave up after one session. A droning monotone presentation which actually suits the storyline. Most modern authors seem to follow a script, plot and storyline interspersed with background and packing between to boost the word count, here we have word count interspersed with more wordcount, if there is a plot it would only arrive after several hours of the droning presentation has sapped the will to live.
