About this listen

November 5th, 1982. It's been one of the worst days of Detective Sergeant Jack Frost's life. He has buried his wife Mary, and must now endure the wake, attended by all of Denton's finest. All, that is, apart from DC Sue Clark, who spends the night chasing a bogus tip-off, before being summoned to the discovery of a human foot. And the night gets worse.

Local entrepreneur Harry Baskin is shot inside his club, an off-licence is set on fire and a famous painting goes missing. And Superintendant Mullett's attempts to join the Freemasons are being rudely thwarted.

As the week goes on, a cyclist is found dead in suspicious circumstances, and the arsonist strikes again. Frost is on the case.

Good plotting but not the Frost I know

Would you listen to Morning Frost again? Why?

Yes - it's a good story

Would you recommend Morning Frost to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes because the plot lines are faithful to the originals and very well done but with the caveat that the Frost character is more like the sanitised version you see on the TV rather the rather coarse version in the original books

Which character – as performed by Stephen Thorne – was your favourite?

Frost

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes but it's obviously too long for that which is no bad thing

Any additional comments?

The story is good with different strands interwoven in keeping with the originals but I prefer the cruder, sloppy character of the original books

Brilliant

Stephen Thorne - Narrator, brings the characters to life in all the Frost books.
I hadn't watched the TV series before listening to all of the audio books based around Touch of Frost.
They keep you gripped all the way through and as a crime enthusiast I haven't really guessed the end yet!

Well written and superbly read.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book,

A very rivetting story. Upset when nearly finished and husband came in for tea, couldn't wait to get back to it.

Ignore other reviewer giving low score...

Any additional comments?

The other reviewer who rated this low due to it not matching the continuity of the television version is missing the point; these books are prequels to R.D Wingfield's novels, which not only differ in plot from the later David Jason series but paint a vastly different picture of the lead character. For what it's worth, Frost's wife has already been dead for some years in the first of the original novels (Frost at Christmas).

A worthy end to a magnificent saga, but I still want more

James Henry makes a worthy set of prequels to the original Wingfield series and it is great the way plots and characters develop over the three books in the prequels. I have been taking as long as possible to listen to the whole Frost series and now that I have reached the end of what there is I just wish they would write one more.

It would be interesting to go back to the first again in the light of the prequels and see if they deepen the experience of the stories after Frost is made up to Inspector.
