Summary

From an early age, Lee McKenzie had access to a motorsport world that most are rarely allowed into. From spending time in the paddock as a teen to becoming a highly respected Formula One journalist and presenter, Lee has been at the heart of motorsport for almost twenty years.

On the frontline of one of the most watched sports on the planet and gaining the respect of F1 world champions with her tough but fair interview approach, Lee has shared experiences, hire cars, parties and friendships with a host of drivers from Michael Schumacher to Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel to Jenson Button.

Inside F1 tells the stories of the careers of seven stars of the sport using her personal contact and interviews throughout the years. Lee's unique perspective takes us through the highs and lows, the controversies and crashes that led to some of the biggest and most memorable interviews in recent years. Lee's close relationship with the drivers makes Inside F1 an enthralling behind-the-scenes account of one of the biggest sports in the world.

Brilliant insight into F1 by the author

Absolutely superb book, full of those well observed details and interesting anecdotes that help us understand more about the F1 world and some of the best drivers. Full of detail and humour. My only regret is that the audio book is finished. Now for the hardback version. Lee gets pole position, fastest lap and the win with this book. More please, Lee!

Good Try, Could be a lot better.

Lee obviously knows her stuff but I would have hoped for much more insight than was given. As an F1 fan there’s nothing here that I didn’t already know and as such it’s just going over old ground. What makes it worse is Lee’s narration style which leaves a lot to be desired, it’s very stilted and sounds like it’s being read off an auto queue. A more conversational tone would have probably worked better.

Good stories but weak narration

As I said in the title, there are some great stories here, but the narration leaves a lot to be desired sadly.

Lee is a great journalist and presenter but she reads this book in a very stilted and emotionless manner which makes it difficult to really connect with the fascinating stories.

It’s a shame, but I still got some enjoyment from this book.

Just to add one more thing, I spotted a mistake in the Jenson Button section where she says at one point that he was celebrating his ‘200th win’ when she meant ‘200th Grand Prix’ whoops!

F1 from (almost) behind the tyre wall

Lee tells a good story, shares insights that only an insider would know. She left out DCs famous post-race comment about her chest, more’s the pity. An enjoyable listen whilst in the car. Reading Adrian Newey’s book afterwards gave depth and relevance to some of Lee’s stories. Recommended.

Dulcet Tones

A wonderful book with lots of little hidden gems but also the beautiful dulcet tones of Lee reading it to you adds an extra dimension. A must-buy for any F1 fan or Lee Mckenzie fan for that matter.

"Formula 1, what a wonderful world."

As a long time follower of Forrmula 1, this reader has grown fond of the excellent and seemingly spontaneous interviews and comments by the elegant and informed Lee McKenzie. The drivers with whom she spoke seemed to enjoy their conversations, too. Her warm voice and gentle Scottish (easily understood) accent were an added bonus to her TV appearances. So it was with sad surprise that her reading of this, her book about the race world was more jarring than her on screen appearances Still good to hear, though.

Lee McKenzie was present in the Brazilian race in 2008, which Massa won, and for a few moments was belueved to have become World Champion, only to lose it to Hamilton in the last few seconds of the race. And it was really for her chapter on Felipe Masse that I purchased this book - there is plenty by and about the other F1 Champions listed available, but not the much loved Brazillian, now several.years retired who never did gain the title.
This is a book about Lee herself and the World Champions she knew personally and interviewed publicly, and includes, besides Felipe, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel , Jensen Button, Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, and Louis Hamilton with thumbnails of their backgrounds, their racing and F1 lives with main, often dramatic, events ighlighted.

Very interesting for F1 fans both new and old to relive some of the best highlights of racing this century.
