About this listen

The full-length, in-depth and intimate autobiography from Jenson Button, one of Britain's greatest ever racing drivers.

Jenson Button is one of the finest racing drivers of his generation. His 17 years in Formula One have seen him experience everything the sport has to offer, from nursing duff cars round the track to winning world championships and everything in between. Here, Jenson tells his full story for the first time in his own honest, intelligent and eloquent style - from growing up as part of a motor-racing-mad family under the guidance of his father, John, to arriving at Williams as a fresh-faced 20-year-old to being written off as a playboy, distracted by the luxurious trappings of his lifestyle, and his fight back to the very pinnacle of his sport.

Jenson's world championship victory for the unsponsored and unfancied Brawn GP team is one of the most extraordinary against-the-odds sports stories of the century. Jenson's book lifts the lid on the gilded and often hidden world of Formula One. He reveals his relationships with some of the biggest names in the sport - Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso - as well some of the most colourful characters, such as Bernie Ecclestone, Ron Dennis, Frank Williams and serial winner Ross Brawn.

Above all he puts you right inside the cockpit, in the driving seat, travelling at over 200 miles per hour, battling the fear of death, showing you what happens when it goes wrong at high speed and allowing you to experience the euphoria of crossing the line first.

Decent book, good performance but...

...the narrator made a lot of pronunciation mistakes in drivers' names. Not a major problem, but it does pull the listener out of the story as it jars somewhat. Could have been easily avoided with a bit of prior research.

Fantastic, I really loved it and want to know more

I really loved the passion in Button's writing and now want to hear more from F1 drivers, especially Lewis Hamilton to compare their stories.
While some reviewers were not happy with the pronunciation of drivers names I didn't notice, but I'm not an F1 officianado.

Very Entertaining

I enjoyed listening and hearing the stories throughout Jenson Button's career.

I see some people comment on the reader, I enjoyed his reading and the mistakes in driver names wasn't an issue for me.

Very well written and Button does come through in his writing.

If you are interested in Motor Racing, F1 or sports autobiographies then I would recommend listening to this.

Usually average!

Sports stars autobiographies are often underwhelming and seem contrived and written by someone else - this one has feel and a reality to it that makes me want to meet Jenson and share stories of high level sport which I am privileged to work in - his feelings ring true and his life is special yet normal. Just a damn good listen.

Good book, poor narration

Very interesting however the narrator does the story no justice at all. Whoever chose a boring voice to narrate a book that should stir the soul should reflect on this choice.

Excellent insight into his life

Really enjoyable book that goes from childhood days through to the end of his F1 career.

Narration is good but some of the pronunciation of the other drivers names is “interesting”.

I miss characters like JB these days...

Loved this book.
OK, so I agree the narrator isn't an F1 fan, and some of the pronunciations of the drivers and circuits of the world are not what we are used to hearing during commentary and post race interviews (i.e. probably incorrect). But actually, I can't criticise Jack Hawkins too much, as when he wasn't getting a few pronunciations wrong I actually got drawn into the book and at times forgot it wasn't JB reading to me.

JB does a good job of detailing his love of motorsport from being a small boy, through Karting and into F1. I frequently found myself looking for highlight videos of races online as his descriptions of races made me want to watch them again. I think its easy to forget that races have 20+ people in them, and even when they are not battling for the points each driver has a story to tell.

The best part of the book was, for me, that JB is out of F1 now and clearly felt able to talk about some characters in ways he might not if he was still looking for drives. Suffice to say that he found some famous F1 personnel quite frustrating.

His Dad was clearly the inspiration behind everything, and (spoiler alert) the last epilogue explained beautifully why he's never returned to F1 - "not without Dad", quoting his father at an early Karting race when he was interviewed and said "it's my hobby - Jenson is just the pilot".

Funny, moving and interesting. A quality few hours. Thank you audible.

Not bad. Certainly worth a credit

A bit like Jensen, seems to tick all the boxes but still missing something. A light and easy story to listen to but didn't really quite grip.

Narration a bit monotone and dull but not so bad it's unlistenable.

Certainly worth a credit to pass the time in the car.
