Summary

A subterranean power creates strange bedfellows for Jason and his friends in the epic next installment of He Who Fights with Monsters.

Following the devastating attack on Yaresh, its people are left to pick up the pieces. The city lies in ruins, but its decimated defenders have more to deal with than just reconstruction. Jason's actions during the battle have brought unwelcome attention from allies and enemies alike. While the adventurers question his loyalty, the messengers question his very nature. Both have designs on Jason that he intends to thwart, but a danger comes to light that shifts everyone's agenda.

Deep underground, a hidden civilization has survived by tapping into a long-buried power. That power's growing instability has become both a threat and an opportunity to the warring surface factions. Neither side can stop or claim the power alone, leading to an uneasy alliance with a reluctant Jason at the center. The adventurers, messengers, and Jason himself all have intentions for the power but little idea what awaits them below ground. There are more players involved than any of them realize, and soon, they will have greater problems than each other.

A return to form - why would people want less?

Yes it's long. Yes there's a lot of story and characters, politics, trauma, recovery, sillyness, battles, spectacle, magic... honestly I see the reviews for this series every time talking about how it's declined and I worry as I start the latest book, and I just don't see it. Jason is smug but he's also loyal and kind... to anyone that lets him be. I can't wait for book 11!

Liked it.

I don't like fast pasted(read zero depth or arcs) litrpg books were it's all fight scenes, so finding this was great. Read all of them, yeah there are some bad ones but over all it's a fun series.

Fantastic as always

Only 2 complaints: 1 the book finished and now I need to wait for the next one. 2 the book was a little slower to get started BUT was still as good as ever. I love the references to films and series in the book, I always have to pause and laugh out loud each time. Can't wait for the next one!! Always listen to Admiral Ackbar!

Emotional impact, and moral lessons

I love how the story interweaves humour with loss, and shows the emotional impact of the characters, which, putting aside the almost exclusively fantastical nature of the story, I believe is accurate. Especially when compared to my own experiences with grief and loss, which this book series has helped me deal with.
The growth of the characters throughout the series, although in an exaggerated manner, is a marvel on its own. It has provided me with an emotional roller-coaster that I'll never forget. taking me from laughter, to tears, to joy in the span of a few minutes.
Jason Asano has become one of my role models for how I should conduct myself in life (I'm 20) and has shown me the value of speaking out, and standing up for my values. Even through his many flaws, mistakes, and misconduct his inner sense of right and wrong almost always shines through. This character is, I believe, a very good example of true masculinity (oooh a buzz word, someone'll get angwy :p).
The one and only criticism I have is that there was one scene, in which one character was explaining something to another (I don't remember precisely what it was) and it felt so forcefully and awkwardly written as to make me physically ill, so, dear author, don't do bad writing, you big dingus.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you :D

I like the character growth

The book is more slow paced then it's predecessors and I like the ways it shows off the character growth of Asano. Really looking forward to the next book

Still the best LitRPG series I've read to date!

I love this series so much, the characters are compelling, the world and magic system feels deep and thought through, and the story is both super funny and deeply emptional!
The pacing of the last few books, including this one, has slowed considerably, but I don't dislike it. It's slower, but that slower pace let's us get more insight into the details of the world and the thoughts of the characters, while keeping relevant.
So, another hit in a series of hits in my opinion!
