About this listen

The brilliant, heart-warming debut novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Dummy and Man vs Toddler

Frank is a miserable old curmudgeon. An agoraphobic recluse and widower whose only company is the 'ghost' of his wife, Marcie. He is estranged from friends and family and is entirely cut off from the rest of the world.

That is until he meets Red.

Red is six years old. He's a funny, imaginative, and kind little boy who - following the separation of his parents - moves in next door. Red is fascinated by his new neighbour and seemingly oblivious to Frank's grumpy demeanour and strange ways.

What on Earth will come of this unlikely friendship? Only time will tell...

Every annoying kid you’ve ever known and loved

Goodness me. This could have easily been just a good story. But instead Matt decided to make it heartfelt and funny so that you find yourself down aisle three in Asda thinking “oh remember when Red said that” and having a little chuckle to yourself. Then trying to explain to your husband about the pretend kid that said a funny thing that you’re still laughing about and then he’s asking me if the pretend kid is with us now……..it was a whole thing. Anyway. Fab book enjoy

Recommend For Light Reading

Loved this. Nice story. Not taxing so light relief. Beautifully read. You know what's going to happen but it's not designed to be an edge of your seat thriller. It's just a lovely read/listen. I give it 👂👂👂👂 👂

A fun and beautiful heartfelt story

I really loved this. Listened to it in two days. It's a familiar story but one that has real depth of character and a lot of humour. Would highly recommend.

Incredibly touching, without being saccharine

An incredibly touching story about love, loss, loneliness and the power of friendship, that made me laugh as much as it made me cry.

The characters are relatable, the dialogue feels natural, and the author really captures a snapshot of a life.

'As is a tale, so is a life, not in how long it is but how good it is' - and this is a bloody good tale told very well!

Having switched many audio books off due to an unlistenable narrator, this narrator is exceptional in his reading of such a beautiful book.
