Summary
1961. On a sweltering summer’s day, while her family picnics by the stream on their Suffolk farm, 16-year-old Laurel hides out in her childhood tree house, dreaming of the bright future she can’t wait to seize. But before the idyllic afternoon is over, Laurel will have witnessed a shocking crime that changes everything.
2011. Now a much-loved actress, Laurel finds herself overwhelmed by shades of the past. Haunted by memories and the mystery of what she saw that day, she returns to her family home and begins to piece together a tale of three strangers from vastly different worlds – Dorothy, Vivien and Jimmy – who are thrown together in wartime London and whose lives are fiercely and fatefully entwined.
Critic reviews
'Morton has obvious star power.... Her novels are Australia’s most successful exports since Colleen McCullough’s “Thorn Birds” stormed the world in 1977.' (The New York Times Book Review)

Beautiful
What a beautiful, wise story. Includes probably the biggest plot twist I have ever heard.

A great romantic thriller
I was so sad when the story came to an end, It had romance, sadness, happiness all rolled into a thriller that I couldn’t guess the end until I was practically at the end of the story. Loved all the characters, I could imagine each and everyone of them. The history of the blitz and war time London was so interesting and realistic. The narrator was excellent, this book is easily worth 5 stars.

An intriguing war story
This was a great story, but it could have been told in a third of the time. I'm probably a victim of my times and have become an impatient reader, so padding is annoying and I read the end half way through :) Having said that Kate Morton is an amazing story teller and did what she does best brilliantly. I felt I was taken places and was lost in time, which is exactly what I want from a great book.

Secrets at their best
The narrator was pretty good although some of the male voices were a bit high pitched. However the story was super. It ran smoothly from present to past just how o like and a true Kate Moreton style. Great characters and fabulous twists. Very good ending too.
