Summary

Beobrand finds himself caught between the perilous intrigues of royalty and the Church in this latest thrilling Bernicia Chronicles adventure.

AD 652. Beobrand has been ordered to lead a group of pilgrims to the holy city of Rome. Chief among them is Wilfrid, a novice of the Church with some surprisingly important connections. Taking only Cynan and some of his best men, Beobrand hopes to make the journey through Frankia quickly and return to Northumbria without delay, though the road is long and perilous.

But where Beobrand treads, menace is never far behind. The lands of the Merovingian kings are rife with intrigue. The queen of Frankia is unpopular and her ambitious schemes, though benevolent, have made her powerful enemies. Soon Wilfrid, and Beobrand, are caught up in sinister plots against the royal house.

After interrupting a brutal ambush in a forest, Beobrand and his trusted gesithas find their lives on the line. Dark forces will stop at nothing to seize control of the Frankish throne, and Beobrand is thrown into a deadly race for survival through foreign lands where he cannot be sure who is friend and who is foe.

The only certainty is that if he is to save his men, thwart the plots, and unmask his enemies, blood will flow.

Amazing story

The characters are very believable and reminds me that regardless of the time period, motivations and core values of right and wrong are eternal

Beobrand goes to Europe

A worthy extension to the fighting in England sees Beobrand and his find new goes and new tragedies in Frankia. Matthew still loves to repeat himself (many times) about his brave band of gesithas, his sword, his Hall, his woman, the death battle cry, over and over again but the story was good.

Gripping, from start to finish

This is outstanding, one of, if not the best of the whole series. A true master of the page turner.

Got a little stuck!

Beo continues his rather disordered life. His gang of warriors continue to support him through thick and thin. Although the story was decently paced it felt that some of it was more filler than real action and adventure. Maybe it was just me but from the ambush I was just waiting for the treacherous be outed. I hope that this next book drives something different and that the ever loyal Beo and his troops receive some substantial reward for their duty.

Improving

Not been the biggest fan of these books and the hero remains a bit boorish but the story wasn’t bad and the historical setting was interesting.

excellent read

listened to this book as my first Audible book.
wasn't sure how I would take to having the story read out to me and took a bit of getting used to but the narrator was excellent and the book itself didn't disappoint.
I love the Beobrand Books and can't wait for the next installment .
thanks

Love the new tale

I love these books so much, the way Beobrand is wound into existing stories and characters is incredible. I love this latest instalment where we see Beo fight and make friends something he is amazing at. Can’t wait to see the next steps in his European journey
