About this listen

Reunited, and it feels better than good....

It was a long time ago, but Luke will never forget Jason Delancey and their first kiss under the bleachers of football practice. Now, 20 years later, he has a lot more to focus on than the one man who got away. Divorced with a seven-year-old son and a vicious lawsuit against the Silver Oak Medical Center to deal with, Luke has no time for reminiscent feelings of the past.

When Jason walks back into his life as the attorney on the case, all of those old emotions and desires come tumbling forth. But when Luke's overprotective brothers try to get in the way of a reunion between the long-lost lovers, it's up to Jason and Luke to fight for what they couldn't have so long ago. And the fight is harder than they ever imagined as they go up against Luke's family and a lawsuit that's determined to destroy them.

With their future family on the line, can these two finally overcome family law and retrieve the love they were destined to find?

Family

I received this audiobook as a freebie. I had the kindle edition for a while but I hadn't got round to reading it yet.
Note this book is a non-shifter Mpreg.

The theme family runs through this story, whether immediate, the ones you make at work and the intimate relationship you develop

There are several stories Luke a nurse practitioner with a young son, Caleb, meeting up with his childhood sweetheart, Jason, now the hospital's senior lawyer trying to see if this was relationship which could be rekindled and trusted, Luke ex Steve back on the scene, Luke's brothers enmeshed in Luke's life who are supportive but restrictive, not seeing him as someone who can make decisions. Luke is trying to sort this out whilst having to come to work each day and run the gauntlet of medical activists against palliative care whose action gets more and more dangerous.

I found the storyline believable and quickly came to care for the central characters. Also, although for the most part, I did not approve of Luke's brothers, I can understand that family often think they they are the people who know you best and how interdependence can frame the idea that you have of yourself, your abilities and the right to choose to do something that may just be for you can restrict your choices. Unfortunately, the activists were close to most of our daily experience whether personal or through the lens of the media, where people think that their beliefs override the rights of others.

Although it not the first in the series it is the first that I have listened to and you can see that many of the relationships go beyond just being good colleagues, another family. I would read/listen to another book in the series.

I wasn't sure about David Loan's narration in the first chapter but he grew on me as the characters developed and I would listen to him again.

Compelling

This is a compelling story. As the title suggests, family is at the heart of it...whether by blood or by families that are made. Then we can add a gripping plot that kept me in its thrall from start to finish. As with Book 2, Playing Daddy, omega Luke has to find the strength to overcome all the difficulties in his background before he can find real happiness. Lawyer Jason is so sweet and always supportive of both Luke and Caleb. How he is with Harvey is the icing on the cake.

I particularly enjoyed the turnaround in attitude of Dom. From copying oldest brother Joe, he finally develops his own opinions that he isn't afraid to voice. I was hoping that he had a book of his own, but I couldn't find one.

David Loan narrates the book in an effective manner. It did take me a while to get used to his style because he narrates quickly at times, but his portrayal of Caleb is excellent and totally won me over.
