Summer in London stops for no-one. Not the half-naked boozers, stoners, and cruisers, the hen parties glugging from bejewelled bottles, the drag queens puffing on hurried fags. It’s June 2019, and everyone has converged on the city’s parks, beer gardens and street corners to revel in the collective joys of being alive.
Everyone but Maggie. She’s 30, pregnant and broke. Faced with moving back to the town she fought to escape, she’s wondering if having a baby with boyfriend Ed will be the last spontaneous act of her life. Ed, meanwhile, is trying to run from his past with Maggie’s best friend Phil and harbouring secret dreams of his own.
Phil hates his office job and is living for the weekend, while falling for his housemate, Keith. But there’s a problem: Keith has a boyfriend and there might not be room for three people in the relationship. Then there’s Rosaleen, Phil’s mother, who’s tired of feeling like a side character in her own life. She’s just been diagnosed with cancer and is travelling to London to tell Phil, if she can ever get hold of him.
As Saturday night approaches, all their lives are set to change forever. It’s the hottest summer on record and the weekend is about to begin…
One of the hottest debuts of 2024, as featured in GUARDIAN, GQ, ESQUIRE, THE BOOKSELLER, IRISH TIMES, INDEPENDENT, THE SKINNY, HERO MAGAZINE, PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

On Friendships and relationships - and what it means to “grow up”
I enjoyed the characters and how they interwove their stories - lives across Ireland, London and Essex.
As someone who has lived in Hackney for most of my life I could quickly visualise all the places they were taking about, but I wondered if readers who don’t know the ins and outs of east London nightlife would feel the same nostalgia.
The bits that worked best for me were towards the end - the threads of the different characters joining together, and the reflections from the older characters.
An easy listen and quite fun!

Addictive tale about young Londoners trying to survive the chaos of the city and the turmoil of their emotional lives
Honestly loved it but as someone who grew up on the West-Essex-East-London boarder this book hit a lot of familiar places and vibes. Turbulent romance, heartbreak and queer joy all rolled into one heatwave summer. A love letter to endless promises London offers.
Particularly enjoyed the description of Colors nightclub in Basildon and raves on Hackney marshes.

A walking tour of East London
This book with its clear and concise language is like being taken on a walking tour of Dalston and Bermondsey through the interwoven lives of friends who live there. As a local to the area it felt like I was listening to the chat of group of friends at the table opposite me in my favourite pub.

Young adult fiction
A good account of the solipsistic, delusional, self-absorbed thinking of teens and young adults. It’s a good enough story in its way. But the ruinations of the various tortured characters/victims are likely to seem comical to older readers.

A lot can happen in a weekend
Is this a Pulitzer Prize winning book no but it’s a great debut. Love the story the questioning of sexuality, how bullying effects you as an adult, families, friendships. This book is rich with themes and the writing is good as well.

A great book.
My one complaint is that the narrator pronounces the author's name wrong. 'Usheen', not 'Osheen'. Overall a well-written story.

Sweltering and beautiful!
I listened to this book about London in a heatwave whilst walking around London in a heatwave! I loved the reality of the characters and their dilemmas. I was gripped all the way through and will be thinking about it for some time to come. Beautiful and poignant.
