Summary
Deep below a desolate Utah mountain lies the largest platinum deposit ever discovered. A billion-dollar find, it waits for any company that can drill a world's record, three-mile-deep mine shaft. EarthCore is the company with the technology, the resources, and the guts to go after the mother lode. Young executive Connell Kirkland is the company's driving force, pushing himself and those around him to uncover the massive treasure. But at three miles below the surface, where the rocks are so hot they burn bare skin, something has been waiting for centuries. Waiting...and guarding. Kirkland and EarthCore are about to find out first-hand why this treasure has never been unearthed.

A fun listen, but overlong
It's a story that sets up nicely and trots along at a good pace for the most part but starts to drag towards the end.

Gripping sci fi at its best
Loved the story development and narration right from the start. within minutes, you find yourself lost in the quickly moving pace of this book. Ray Porter, as always, rules supreme at drawing you in with his wide range of character voices. This really is a special book tbh.

Hilarious!
Very enjoyable, I'm not sure if I would have managed to read this, from a literary point of view it would have driven me crazy. The plot is fundamentally brilliant. In the hands of a serious SciFi writer it could have been really special. It is a bit trashy, but it's fun and I didn't want to stop listening. The narrator's accents had me in stitches at times, the female voices sounded more like South Park characters than anything else. This guy is a real life Alan Partridge! That however unintended, only added to my enjoyment :)

Brilliant story
What a great story with characters that you understand.
This is my First Scott Sigler book and what an amazingly difficult to stop listening to story it contained.
Well worth listening to.

Overall a good listen with a few caveats
Interesting story about first contact and ... well, mining. The first half of this book is nicely paced, you don't really 'root' for any of the characters to begin with which I think is fine, sometimes too much effort is made to make a character likeable which loses the plausibility. Things get a little drawn out towards the end but overall it's worth the listen.
My one main gripe is the amount of swearing, authors may need to revisit the copy because unlike the written word, listening to this in the car or at home when children are around is a no go, which meant it took longer to finish it.

predictable isn't a bad thing
There's a reason archetypes exist.
fun book, good narration, nothing new but there rarely is. some character growth to be found, some stupid decisions and over aggressive cruelty.

Gripping
I had fallen out with audio books after having a few dud ones. This book has rekindled my love for them. A great listen with wonderful narration, the characters are each built with care and you grow to love or hate depending on the person. This is a long book but i wouldn't have said that it felt that it was 20 hours. The story grabs you from the beginning and keeps you throughout. I will get more from this author and the narrator.
