About this listen

A CIA officer and his recruit arrive in Damascus to hunt for a killer.

CIA case officer Sam Joseph is dispatched to Paris to recruit Syrian Palace official Mariam Haddad. The two fall into a forbidden relationship, which supercharges Haddad's recruitment and creates unspeakable danger when they enter Damascus to find the man responsible for the disappearance of an American spy.

But the cat and mouse chase for the killer soon leads to a trail of high-profile assassinations and the discovery of a dark secret at the heart of the Syrian regime, bringing the pair under the all-seeing eyes of Assad's spy catcher, Ali Hassan, and his brother Rustum, the head of the feared Republican Guard. Set against the backdrop of a Syria pulsing with fear and rebellion, Damascus Station is a gripping thriller that offers a textured portrayal of espionage, love, loyalty, and betrayal in one of the most difficult CIA assignments on the planet.

Not sure.

Loved all the details about Syria and how the CIA world worked. Some really great reading/listening there but I felt like lots of details in the story were like the ‘I am Pilgrim’ book by Terry Hayes(an excellent book). I even googled after I finished this book to see if the authors were the same person but no they are not.

Gripping, vibrant, engaging.

Good story, well-written and well-performed. If you liked Homeland on TV, you’ll love this. However, that does not mean if you hated Homeland you will hate this.

Amazing story. Plain awful narration

Fast paced spy thriller. Loads of tradecraft and decent plot twists. An easy beach read but good cast of characters.

As for the narration it was the worst I’ve ever heard. I ended up buying the book and reading it because the narration was spoiling it.

Well researched and exciting spy story set in Syria

Well researched booked, the author clearly knows the Syrian conflict well. Exciting story that’s well told and contextualised.

Best spy novel I have read/listened to for a long while

OK, not my usual genre but technically strong storyline, good pacing, takes you through the highs and lows like a thriller should. The goodies are all drop dead gung ho and gorgeous and the baddies drop dead donkeys, which is a bit of a down as the writer does show scope for nuance in at least one of the villains. Who remains a torturer and mass killer, but that is just the day job after all. Well worth a read/listen in my opinion.,

Fabulous

Really well told thriller but with some good political insight. The folly of imperialism. Author is at times merciless.

I think it is an excellent book with gripping espionage, cat and mouse games and secret service tactics.

Stand out novel in this crowded genre!

I really enjoyed listening to this story, woven around many truths and impressions of the terrible conflict in the middle east.

Gripping story. Difficult narration

Warmed to the characters and loved the tense plot line. Narration was difficult to follow for UK ears. I will read Moscow Station rather than listen as a result.
