Summary
Before he can return to New York from Miami, Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast is called to investigate something very strange that has happened on the west coast of Florida. Dozens of human feet, identically clad in blue, have washed up on beaches. All exhibit unmistakable signs of violence. Beyond that, nothing is known about the feet, except that they are fresh and haven't been in the water long.
Pendergast reluctantly makes his way to the barrier islands off South Florida to investigate a case he believes to be outside his area of expertise and his interest. Once there, he finds the case both disturbing and intriguing and is drawn into the mystery almost against his will. A preliminary pathology report indicates the feet were chopped, torn or even wrenched from their bodies in the crudest of ways.
Over the next few days, still more continue to wash in, until the number tops 100. Soon the case begins to take a most surprising and complex turn and Pendergast finds it necessary to call in Special Agent Armstrong Coldmoon for a risky and very specific undercover assignment. And when, at last, the true origin of this awful gift from the sea becomes clear, the former partners are forced to confront an enemy and a horror, more powerful and deadly than any they have faced before.

Awesome book very well read
After the passing of Rene Auberjonois who voiced so many of the past titles I thought this title was going to be a difficult Listen but Jefferson's style is very close to Rene's and such a talented voice actor you soon get in to it. RIP Rene and well done Jefferson Mays.

Always good
As always the authors skin a good yarn with the usual twists, action and satisfactory denouement. Agent Pendergast a southern gentleman with a charming amount of oddness as always. always.

Another solid adventure for Agent Pendergast
I was initially disappointed to see that the narrator for Pendergasts latest adventure wasn't Rene Auberjonois, who narrated the last few books in the series. Jefferson Mays makes an admiral replacement however, and did a great job at bringing Pendergasts distinctive accent and mannerisms to life. They both sound similar enough that I'd happily have either back for the next book in the series. As for the story, you probably know what to expect by now, as it hits the familiar beats common in Pendergast books. A grizzly and mysterious crime scene, obstructive local authority figures, extensive research into obscure fields, some dark/horror elements, tense and thrilling action scenes, and so on. This book certainly continues to play it safe, and fits into the usual shape of the series, but is still a strong instalment and I'm already looking forward to the next one!
