Longlisted for the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction, 2015.

When Noel Bostock - aged 10, no family - is evacuated from London to escape the Blitz, he winds up in St Albans with Vera Sedge - 36, drowning in debts. Always desperate for money, she's unscrupulous about how she gets it.

The war's thrown up all manner of new opportunities, but what Vee needs is a cool head and the ability to make a plan. On her own, she's a disaster. With Noel, she's a team.

Together they cook up an idea. But there are plenty of other people making money out of the war, and some of them are dangerous. Noel may have been moved to safety, but he isn't actually safe at all....

Heart warming and delightful!

A follow on from the wonderful Old Baggage, this was a brilliant story of love and grief, parenting and childhood with the backdrop of wartime London. Thoroughly enjoyed!

I’ll listen to this over and over.

The characters in this book are well observed. Loveable and flawed in equal measure. I found myself researching further into wartime scams.
Narration was perfect.
Perfect read,

Second in this trilogy

Whereas the prequal, Old Baggage, was a smash hit with me this book did not have the same impact. A good listen and brilliant performance, Historically relevant from the emotional and back-stories of WW2 citizens.

A most enjoyable and heartwarming experience beautifully read. I was sorry when it got to the end and wished it had been longer.

A most enjoyable and heartwarming experience beautifully read. It certainly brought up the flavour of life in London during the blitz. The character of Noel is delightful and I was sorry to get to the end.

Not a strong story or narration.

I found the narration a little harsh. By that I mean that it made me feel on edge so I would have to be in the right mood to listen to the voice.
I really enjoyed Old Baggage but didn't enjoy this in the same way. Many irritating characters.
