About this listen
"I'm not safe - you have to help me..."
Little Lorna Bell is from a notorious family on a rundown estate. Everyone thinks she's a nasty piece of work. The schoolchildren call her a thief. But Lorna's hair is matted, her shoes pinch her feet, and school teacher Claire Penny can't help herself; some kids just need a bit more support, a bit more love, than the rest.
As the bond between teacher and pupil grows stronger, Claire sees Lorna's bruises, and digs to uncover the disturbing tale behind them. Heartbroken, Claire knows she has to act. She must make Lorna safe.
Just when Claire thinks she has protected Lorna, a chance encounter brings enigmatic stranger Marianne Cairns into their lives. Marianne seems generous and kind but there is something about her story that doesn't quite add up. Why does she feel so at home, and why is Lorna suddenly so unsettled?
Claire has risked everything to save Lorna. But what can save Claire from the shocking truth?
An utterly unputdownable and darkly compelling listen that will have fans of The Girl on the Train, The Sister, and Gone Girl absolutely hooked.

Makes you think.....
Not what I was expecting at all. a very cleverly written story. I completely identifed with Claire, and now, even though this is a work of fiction I will definitely think twice before believing everything I hear. It seems so natural to instantly believe the voice of an apparently innocent young child. An excellent performance by the narrator, would definitely listen to her again.

Bad little girl.
Overall I enjoyed this book.
Disturbed at how two adults can be so intimidated by a ten year old, but it can happen.
Would have liked the investigation to have encompassed Clare's absence from the village.
Would have liked more insight into the dreadful Maryanne.
Felt the end was flat, big let down there.
Loved the narrative.

Gripping thriller
I've got this headline from Wikipedia and other websites when I was looking for a discretion of this book before I've got it
It's a good book
For the point I didn't like I thought the story was very predictable, there were no mystery at all and the direction of the event was very clear from the beginning. The simplicity or more accurately the naivety of the main character what just too much and somehow unbelievable
Having said that the writer still managed to keep the story interesting and far away from boring

Strange story
From the info I expected a completely different story to what it turned out to be, and I wasn't even sure if I wanted to continue listening halfway through. I did however, and got more and more frustrated with Claire...

Bad little girl
A good thought out book which turns out to be a page turner . The end seems rushed and all the way through you can work out shat is going to happen and then get annoyed because it does . Katherine manners is a brilliant actress with good voices for characters - I recommend the book but there are better authors out there

Terrible
Completely unbelievable storyline, over exaggerated and annoying characters who have been given annoying accents. Can't believe I finished it.

Glad i gave it a chance!
So glad i gave this book a chance. At first i thaught it was going to have orful detailed discriptions of child abuse and i almost didnt read it. This was not the case. I really felt for the charater Clair as she was so misslead , as would many of us in that situation. The last few chapters took me by suprise the most! Poor Clair was attaked in the cellar and left for dead. At the very end the ending was left open, maybe for a sequal, that would be great. Another great read for me.

Disappointing
The storyline was a bit far fetched really, not a lot happened for the first half of the book and got boring, things picked up in the second half but it wasn't very believable at the end.
If I wasn't a mum used to the infant / junior school setting that featured so heavily in the first half of the book, I think I would have lost interest and skipped through those parts. The audio was also strange, the narrator's voice had a tinny sound to it in some chapters.
