Summary
War will always find a man like you.
This ALIEN story begins where most end: with a xenomorph loose on a damaged spaceship hurtling through space. Once a highly decorated marine, Chris Temple, a recently widowed single father to two young daughters, Jane, 11, and Emma, 8, is onboard. Despite his particular set of skills, Chris doesn’t get involved in the fight with the alien, instead focusing on keeping his children safe as the ship comes in for a crash landing.
The family land safely on an idyllic outpost planet, where Chris is told that the ship has been destroyed beyond recognition and nothing could have survived the crash. That’s only the first lie. Chris and his daughters love their new life, but something doesn’t feel right. Chris is a paranoid type, but just because he’s paranoid, doesn’t mean he’s wrong.
There are nasty surprises in store as Chris investigates the web of lies and conspiracies. After leaving a ruined Earth, it seems Chris and his daughters have crash-landed on a planet on the verge of all-out civil war. Chris will have to call on the battle skills he never wanted to use again in order to protect his daughters, deal with violence-hungry marines, and battle the xenomorph that’s killing people regardless of which side of the civil war they’re on.

Full of promise
Lots of intricate detail and so much potential but very little alien action. Just more a story of humans in space.

Tedious.
Unfortunately I had to stop at the 6 hour mark. I gave this a solid attempt. I disliked the main character. Him being in the military used as Deus ex Machina to drive the plot forward grated me. It didn't seem realistic to the tropes of the setting or real life. Overall though the slow burn of the plot with obvious twists just lost me. There's very little alien in this Alien story and nothing unique or interesting in it's absence. I can't recommend it.

Chris, the Jean-Claude Van Damm of the Alien universe
The last few novelisations have been really excellent: The Cold Forge, Prototype and Into Charybdis, as are the most recent graphic novel collections. They have all had engaging story telling, great narrators and edge of your seat suspense anyone could want from the Alien universe. However, the premise of this story is interesting in theory but pretty awful in practice. Between the main character Chris' perfect physique, high quality armed forces training and his ability to connect with his children and softer side - as well the total over use of multiple metaphors in one paragraph and then repeated at will - it is more of a laboured listen than something to look forward to. Chris is also always at the right place at the right time, and with his 'very specific set of skills' everything goes well for him, all the time. It's poor writing. The narrator too is a bit crunchy, putting lots of emphasis on the wrong words and his game show announcer style is grating. I'm going to finish yet - I used a credit for this goddam story - but I'll be avoiding this author in future...meh.

Headless chicken Marines
The story is … tedious and forgettable I’m afraid.
What really makes it bad is the fact that the ultimate badass marines rush into a situation and ultimately die like flies (sigh, facepalm) .
Spoiler alert: where are Xenos ?!?!

Xe-NO-morph.
Military action written by an author with seemingly no experience of military banter? Inconsistent characters, odd motivations. I like the family, community, cult premise but there is not enough Alien. Alien novels should be tales of heroism and survival against hellish adversity. Battling unassailable fiends who thrive from suffering and annihilation.

Eminently enjoyable but forgettable
And I don’t mean that as a slight on the authors work
It’s reminiscent of a Wild West tale but with very small xenomorph content
Enjoyed it and the narration but soon forgotten

Civil war is a great story but the xenomorphs were an add on
I really like the characters and the setting. This could of been just as good if it was about a Weyland Yutani colony who had rebelled. The Xenomorphs just felt like an add on and got in the way of the civil war about to erupt.

should have stayed a fanfic
Story isn't terrible per se. However it really does read like a fanfic, which the author mentions it being to start off with, that got edited ok to be turned into a book. The aliens barely get mentioned and the fight scenes are rushed through. The book is more of an inner monologue of a somewhat Mary sue character that has no particular qualities to them. Nice world building to start off with that doesn't really go anywhere.

Awful female voices by the narrator
Awful female voices by the narrator makes this almost impossible to get through. Got to chapter 8 and have had to stop listening. Story has been pretty awful so far too.

Interesting Concept on Alien
A solid setting and story, with good characters and set pieces. minor pitfalls with repetition however.
