About this listen

At the age of 24, Alastair Humphreys set off to try to cycle round the world. By the time he arrived back home, four years later, he had ridden 46,000 miles across five continents on a budget of just £7,000.

From frozen Siberia tundra to the jungles of central Africa, Alastair recounts his extraordinary adventures in two parts - Moods of Future Joys and Thunder & Sunshine - brought together in audiobook for the first time.

Moods of Future Joys is the story of the first stage of this epic journey. Struggling with the enormity of the challenge he had set himself, Alastair recounts the hardships of the expedition with great honesty. His ride through Europe, a turbulent Middle East and down Africa is buoyed by the kindness of strangers and the thrill of the freedom of the open road.

In Thunder & Sunshine, Alastair continues his journey from South Africa back to Yorkshire, via the whole of the Americas, South to North, Siberia, Japan, and back through China, Central Asia and Europe.

A tale of physical and mental endurance, of taking on wilderness, loneliness and danger in a time before mobile phones and GPS - this is a refreshingly original account from one of today's great adventurers.

i simply can't fathom 4 years on a bike

I can hear 4 years on a bike but I can't fathom it. In his twenties as well. Alistair was in his twenties who I thought I was in mine. Yet I thought I just wasn't organised enough to make it happen. I know now approaching 40 I wasn't slightly mature enough mentally to do this kind of thing. (probably why I never came close)
it's such a callosal undertaking I find myself weeks on from finishing the book thinking about it and saying to myself "Bloody Hell 4 years"
Each one of Alistair's books has brought excitement, fed ambition and also reminded me of the extra beauty that can be found in a bountiful existence.
Out of 100 audiobooks listened to this year Alistair's have made the biggest impact on me and I can't wait to share his podcast, books and adventures with my daughter and my friends. I'm lucky to of found these books

An easy listen and an inspirational story

Although I didnt quite know how I felt about this book after the first chapter by the end I'm certain this is a great book and inspirational tale. it's an easy listen I had in my ears when I needed an easy to follow, interesting but calming listen - usually thoughout the small hours trying to get our baby back to sleep!

Tavel the learn virtually

I enjoyed the book immensely. The struggles, the beauty, the joy, the kindness and the diversity of the world. Alistair also provides his perspectives on the various cultures of the world. It is the sort of book, I could listen to twice.

A fantastically motivating book

A thoroughly enjoyable listen! Alistair’s wit, sensitivity, honesty and openness are so refreshing in a travel writer. No self importance, no self indulgence, no strong opinions. Having backpacked and cycled through many countries myself, I have to say Alistair has a real gift in communicating feelings, connections with people and atmospheres. This is a very uplifting book and puts your faith back in human nature across the globe. Alastair seems to be a really nice genuine guy and he met many many seemingly really nice genuine people around the world. We need to hear more of these sort of stories, instead of listening to The News. I’m sure we would all feel a lot happier and healthier if we did! Thanks Alastair for this reminder that we are living in a fantastic world, with lots of kind and interesting people and fascinating cultures around the world. This world is really worth holding on to!

An honest story, at times funny, at times scary.

A great insight into the experience of the long term traveller. It resonated with me.

A genuine modern day adventure.

A superb true story of a young lad setting out on a round the world cycling adventure that would eventually last 4 years. The tale is genuinely inspirational as to what can be achieved. Even if you are not interested in cycling, or planning something as long and as challenging, I doubt anyone could listen to this and not be inspired to travel, or cycle, somewhere new.

The descriptions of far off lands, the climates, customs and conditions and, most notably, the friendly and generous attitudes shown towards the author, a stranger to the people he met, is a tonic in a world where we are often brainwashed to view foreigners with suspicion, and sometimes even hostility.
