About this listen

He’s terrified of loving her.

Quinn Mallick already had his happily-ever-after, and in the blink of an eye it was ripped away from him. Now he’s content to walk through the rest of his life carrying the weight of that guilt on his shoulders. He’s convinced he doesn’t deserve a second chance. But when the town’s beautiful dance teacher turns her sights on him he finds himself questioning everything.

She’s terrified of losing him.

Lilly Mathewson’s once quiet, predictable life has been turned on its head. Feeling alone and adrift, she finds her comfort in the most unexpected of places. Falling for the town widower was never part of the plan, but there is just something about the temperamental man she can’t seem to let go of.

What started as two grieving people leaning on each other has quickly turned into something neither of them expected. Lilly is ready to take the next step, but how do you move forward when the man you love refuses to let go of the past?

Especially when the only hope they have of healing their broken souls is if they do it together.

Great

So far this has been my favourite of the series. Book 3 in the Pembrooke Series follows Lilly & Quinn who we have met before in book 2. Lilly is Eliza's best friend from book 2 and has just found out her father doesn't have long to live after a cancer diagnosis and we find out Quinn moved back to town after the tragic car accident that left him a widow and single father to his daughter Sophia. The representation of grief, loss, pain, joy and love was really well done throughout this book.

This is what I would class as a medium burn, the spice happens fairly quickly but the emotional connection and development between the MCs takes a while. With stories like these where there has been a loss of a former spouse I find there is always a risk of the new love interests never quite living up to the former and it feeling like they are being settles for, thankfully the way this was written dodged that particular bullet for me. I genuinely liked both MCs and understood their motivations and reasonings throughout the story, the pacing was good and there was good balance between the angst and heartbreaking parts with the fun and hopeful ones. I really enjoyed this read. 🌶🌶
