About this listen

Western civilization has had its run.

The West's own governments are giving up, have already lost, or are leading the charge to something else. This doesn't sit well with those who believe in liberty. This is the story of a people who have lost the political fight, they've lost the culture wars, they haven't seen a level playing field in a generation, and they are about to be made serfs. None of that matters. They're leaving....

Fresh starts are never easy. This is the first book in a story about a new world, different enemies, and old luggage.

Author's note: We've all consumed sci-fi or speculative fiction where the dystopian backdrop is some form of fascism - usually portrayed as conservatism run amok. This is not that kind of book. The backdrop of this book is a socialist and corporate statist disaster on a global scale. It is basically fascism arising from the left. I had to give the protagonists a reason to do what they do.... As such there are numerous disturbing scenes within, portraying everything from socialized medicine, five-year economic plans and government-enforced serfdom. If you think any of that sounds like a panacea for the future, you will not like this book.

The debut novel from a former CIA operations officer who has decided that his lifelong writing habit/hobby/obsession is more fun than "real" work.

Well written and well narrated

A really interesting take on a potential future no matter your leanings. Brilliant mix of Sci fi - action and politics. Already listening to book 2! You won't regret giving this a go.

Great idea. Great reading. Disappointing book

I really liked the basic plot. Western governments become increasingly left wing authoritaran. The Caliphate spreads over much of the rest of the world.
So a group of wealthy Libertarians, take advantage of a chance discover of parallel Earth's, and leave.
Great idea, well read, but the author totally failed for me to make the characters come alive. It left me really not caring about what happens. Disappointed by it.

Novel storyline

This the first book by SM Anderson that I've read/listened to, and after a somewhat slow star it was one that I was impressed with. At first it was hard to see how the very different threads were going to be part of the same story. On the one hand there was the thread of the majority of the worlds governments become more and more left wing, with centralised control over all aspects of their citizens life. The other thread was of a strange experiment in VR going on in a very secret location. The 2 threads are pulled together, when it transpires that the VR experiment is a cover for something quite startling. A bridge has been formed to a parallel earth, that is the same geographically as our earth, but with zero population and none of the environmental issues that are damaging ours. The plan has been put together but free thinkers from around the world to start life anew in this virgin land for people who just want to live free and without the central control being established. Things come to ahead when the US government finds the location of the gate and attempts to take it by force. Can those driven to leave this earth do so before the gate if forcibly shut down?
I found this a well paced novel overall although it did take a bit to get into, the narration was enjoyable and it was a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Whilst I enjoyed it and will certainly be continuing with the series, in all fairness I can't say that it was without its faults:
1) For some readers /listener I think the fact that no attempt was made to explain just how the technology to create the bridge was created in the first place would be drawback. For myself it didn't impact on my enjoyment, as I took it in the same vain as SciFi readers have to take the FTL is in use without there always being a accurate description as to how it works.
2) One thing that did puzzle me was that given all the central control that was in place how did no one pick up on the power usage at the gate site. There must have been an exceptional high power usage to create the gate so why wasn't the power usage noticed? Even a suggestion of there being an on site power station doesn't really hold water as the government would also have picked up the diversion of the fuel to power it, as they did with the missing equipment that had been sent to the new world.
3) Whilst some attempt was made to show that some people were sceptical and the idea when they were told and invited to join the new world, I would have expect the the sceptics to be in the majority but most people seem to have gone along with everything they were told.

Still overall the pluses outweighed the minuses for me and I enjoyed it.

Awful - Written by an Infowars Type. Avoid.

Awful book,

If you are an Alex Jones fan who thinks the lefties and globalists and his other made up baddies are out to get you then youll like this.

If however you have any grasp of reality this nonsense sounds like conspiracy theorist propaganda.
