Carlotta, ragazza veneta primogenita di quattro figli, viveva serenamente la sua vita finché a 17 anni la morte del padre precipitò la sua famiglia in gravi difficoltà economiche. Sua madre decise allora di emigrare con i figli in Brasile per sfuggire alla fame e alla miseria. Carlotta dovette così lasciare il giovane fidanzato che stava facendo il militare. All'addio si fecero la promessa, difficile da mantenere, di ricongiungersi dopo che fossero cresciuti i fratellini di lei. Si imbarcarono su un piroscafo nel 1881 e dopo un viaggio avventuroso arrivarono a destinazione.
