On the eve of a military pullback from the front lines of a zombie war, John “Even” Keel, a cynical, battle-hardened helicopter pilot, hears about the location of a downed Treasury Department airplane purportedly containing a billion dollars in cash. After escaping from New Chicago, Marisol and Elias take shelter in the quarantine zone only to be stalked by nightmarish, blood-enhanced creatures called Threshers. But that’s not the worst of it as they find themselves struggling to survive against Longman’s assassins and weaponized Reaper mechs who are hunting them down.

Marisol is a bounty hunter, tasked with tracking down "Runners" - people who have been paid to take the fall for crimes committed by the wealthy. But when she captures a young Runner with a secret, she unknowingly stumbles into a vast conspiracy. The hunter becomes the hunted as those in power turn the city inside out trying to crush anyone who would dare to expose the truth.

After surviving an ambush and a firefight on a glacier, Danny and the other mech operators discover that the aliens have sent out a distress signal, seeking extraterrestrial reinforcements. Realizing that they need to prepare for another potential attack, the operators take refuge in a military base where they learn that the Mech Command plans to conduct operations in space in the near future. Armed with this intel, the operators return to Washington, DC where Danny begins to gather evidence about the activities of the head of the Mech Command, Jonas Vidmark.
