Set at a time before Brexit and Ireland's peace process, Australian journalist Steve Kennedy travels to London for a vacation after losing his job. The holiday is two-fold: to do some sightseeing and to catch up with a former colleague Jill Redmond who has been working in the English capital. Steve has always liked Jill, and he secretly hopes a relationship might develop between them. The vacation starts to turn sour when London is hit by a series of bombings. There are further complications when one of Jill's journalist colleagues Emma Barrett suddenly vanishes.

Five prostitutes are murdered in the East London districts of Spitalfields and Whitechapel in 1888. In present-day Australia, Henry Evans, is a fourth-generation doctor. He and his wife, Claire have three children: Harriet, 13, Lucy, 10 and John, six. Henry and Harriet both relive in their dreams the murders of the so-called canonical five. Their nightmares are frighteningly similar in detail, especially the death of the fifth victim, Mary-Jane Kelly. The family starts to unravel as the nightmares begin to control their lives.

Adam Davis is devastated after the death of his close friend Madeline Donohue who’s aged in her 20s. Adam and Madeline are first cousins who shared their hopes, their dreams, their fears, and their desires. In a series of flashbacks during the funeral service, Adam reflects on some of the more precious moments they had together: the family gatherings, the parties and the holidays. He recalls with some humour their teenage years and their many heart-to-hearts. Who will find love first, who will marry first, and how many children will they have?
