Every year, all inhabitants of the age of 26 are sent beyond the city walls for the first time in a customary ritual called the Search, in order to experience life outside of the city’s (and deity’s) protection and, thereby, come to appreciate its self-sustaining importance when they gratefully return. Judas and Lucas set out on the Search amongst the others who have come of age, and in the course of their travels, they are abducted by the Caverna Vitae, a religious schism that broke off from the Munutu Terrans hundreds of years ago in order to live by their own beliefs.
