They compartmentalize their lives so that they can keep their stories and their characters straight. They seem to become whomever the situation calls for. They seem to do it with ease and a lack of conscience.

Many of my readers email me with lifetime symptoms of anxiety and depression. They feel as though they missed out on their childhood. They are frustrated, and their relationships with others are suffering because of it. They are struggling to have a relationship with one of the most important people in their life: their father.

A psychological complex can drive a person's thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It can cause one to react inappropriately, irrationally, and violently to any given circumstance. Often, other people are not aware of the signs and symptoms of a psychological complex. However, they are hidden just beneath the surface, driving a person's decisions and causing seemingly stable people to unravel at the most inopportune times. A psychological complex can drive a person to murder without much warning, and he or she may not be so easy to diagnose.

Many people experience the Jocasta Complex in reference to the proverbial "mama's boy". The mother often becomes obsessed with her relationship with her son to the exclusion of many other relationships and interests. She generally only chooses a favorite son whom she puts on a pedestal. She may treat this son as though he is her husband or romantic partner rather than being her offspring.

The relationship duo between borderlines and narcissists tends to be more common than we think. There is no true way to get a good picture of how many relationships span this dynamic, as many borderlines and narcissists go undiagnosed or undetected. Most narcissists don't have the intuition, knowledge of their condition, or interest in their inner world to pursue why they are the way they are. It is unlikely that they would seek treatment because of their overinflated egos...

We listen to what our families' values are, we compare our fathers to other men, and then we find men who fit the ideal that we all have in our heads of the perfect man. We have grown up with our fathers as the images of perfect husbands in our minds, even if our fathers were far from perfect husbands.
