Très rapidement au cours de l'enquête, Sydney Noyce, vingt-quatre ans, devient le suspect numéro 1 : enfant dans un corps d'adulte, il connait bien les trois garçons, passe du temps avec eux au chenil du cynodrome, et une résidente de la cité affirme l'avoir vu suivre Charlie et Scott vers 20h15 le soir de leur disparition. Tout semble logique. Mais l'est-ce vraiment ? Et si Sydney n'était pas celui que les policiers croient ? Que faire de ces incohérentes troublantes dans les témoignages ?

Parfois, plusieurs dizaines d'années plus tard, une nouvelle information, un petit souvenir extrait de l'oubli, un chauffeur de taxi qui se souvient tout à coup de quelque chose en entendant le podcast à la radio, permet de complètement changer la donne... La vérité sur le meurtre de Charlie et Scott est enfin révélée.

Un suspect trop parfait, des aveux trop faciles... Julie McDowell, avocate commise d'office et présente lors du premier interrogatoire de Sydney, avait déjà le sentiment que quelque chose clochait dans cette affaire. Que s'est-il passé entre Sydney et les membres de la brigade criminelle avant les interrogatoires officiels ?
