About this listen

It's the '90s! Not everyone's heard of Nirvana yet, and audiotapes are barely outdated. The live music scene is alive and well, and bands still make things like "demo tapes" and "albums." Were you there?

After missing her best opportunity to attend a prestigious art school, 17-year-old Salvador Dali devotee Zero begins dating Mike, a drummer in an up-and-coming punk band. As their tentative relationship blooms, Zero confronts a ton of baggage holding her back from her art career: the majorly awkward drama with her former best friend, Jenn; her dad's excessive drinking and parents' ongoing fights; and one formerly successful art teacher who might just hold the keys to her future, or smash Z's hopes forever.

When Mike's band gets a chance of lifetime to bust out of black hole that is Metro Phoenix, Zero must make a life-altering decision and answer the one question we all face at some point in our lives:

Follow your own heart, or the heart of the one you love?

Teenage angst

Wow!
What a ride! Zero is what I imagine the quintessential angsty teenage American experience to be like.
It had a whole rollercoaster of emotions, and depth of characters that made me want to know the answers to so many questions... what happened with Jen? Would Zero make it to SAIC? What's going to happen with Mike?
I got completely absorbed by Jillian Yetter's narration. Her emotion and character depiction was on point. Clearly defined voices for each character and read with such emotion, it was like I was living Zero's life alongside her.
Great work!
Great book, great narration!
If you want a slice of teenage intrigue, this is the book to listen to. 5*

Zero

Zero was a very well written story about a 17 year old girl's hopes and dreams while finding her way through life and dealing with things like family problems, relationship drama, and making tough decisions. I really enjoyed this story although I wish there had been an epilogue that was maybe 5 or 10 years into the future to see what happened with these characters as the ending left a lot of possibilities and questions. Jillian Yetter did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. She put so much emotion into the characters and gave everyone their own voice.

Excellent listen!!!

Tom Leveen has written an engrossing, well-written, book full of angst. Amanda is a teenager, recently graduated from high school, who is an artist who wants to make it her life’s work. She was accepted to the school of her dreams, but failed to receive the scholarship she needed to attend. She doesn’t know what to do with that, and is kind of drifting.

Mike is a drummer for an up and coming rock band. He is attracted to Amanda, and he started to hang out with her. He was in a bad relationship before and doesn’t want to go there again. He is honest with her from the beginning.

This is a fantastic story of the search and discovery of two young adults. One that is well written and makes you want to know more about the characters. One that makes me hope for more to their stories. Tom Leveen is an author I will look for again.

Jillian Yetter did such a great job with these characters and brought them to life for me while listening.

Smells like my teen spirit animal...

I just adored this book. My inner 90’s teen loved absolutely everything about the story, the characters, the love, the art, the angst...the descriptions of grimy punk shows!? Right up my street. The narrator was fantastic. Jillian Yetter brought the story to life so well, bringing both distinct character voices and real emotion from beginning to end. Highly recommend!
