Summary

Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets. Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

Critic reviews

"A fascinating, if terrifying, look at psychopaths.... Hare makes a strong case for the view that psychopaths are born, not made.... A chilling, eye-opening report - and a call to action." ( Kirkus)

Confirmed a lot of what I’ve experienced

Brilliant book! Staggering it doesn’t form part of the training for judges, police, social workers, lawyers, healthcare workers , child protection. This was written in 1993 and we still haven’t grasped the issue of the psychopath despite the charities there to help buckling under the strain. This is a shameful reflection on the values of our society, thank you to the author for this well researched and put together book. Shame soooo many are still closed off to the idea these people are sooo damaging to all they come into contact with. Especially their kids. :(

Great book on the nature of psychopathy!

Great book on the nature of psychopathy, from an academic angle. Full of real situations, followed by quotes from sociopaths, giving insight to their varying motivations and thinking. Allthough old, this book doesnt feel outdated, as it describes the behavior and reasoning of psychopaths.

Very useful

Eye opening book. The author describes and gives examples of psychopathy in all aspects of life - not just personal relationships. A highly recommended read, and even more for individuals who tend to attract psychopaths. It is as if psychopaths can smell us from a distance. But, my body has also its defence mechanism, I can feel their negative energy like electricity passing through my body when I am close to such people. When I was younger I thought that I was just anxious. But now in my 40s, I know that my body knows better. Many thanks to the author.

Essential & fascinating

This book is the first essential step on the road towards an understanding of psychopathy. Hare uses real life examples to illustrate the various traits & behaviours of psychopaths to give you a fuller understanding of their condition. It's truly fascinating stuff. The way they see the world, the way they might view YOU, is laid bare, its chilling and compelling.

The only slight down side of this audiobook is the narrator. He reads quite benign sentences with the same menacing tone that he uses to read the sinister ones. He would read a benign sentence such as "I gave a talk at a university" in the same menacing way that he would read "He stabbed the old man several times".
