Summary

'Whodunnit' doesn't matter so much, not to a forensic psychiatrist. We're more interested in the 'why'.

In his 26 years in the field, Richard Taylor has worked on well over a hundred murder cases, with victims and perpetrators from all walks of life. In this fascinating memoir, Taylor draws on some of the most tragic, horrific and illuminating of these cases - as well as dark secrets from his own family's past - to explore some of the questions he grapples with every day:

  • Why do people kill?
  • Does committing a monstrous act make someone a monster?
  • Could any of us, in the wrong circumstances, become a killer?

As Taylor helps us understand what lies inside the minds of his patients, using their own words to tell their stories, he presents us with the most important challenge of all: how can we find common humanity, even in the darkest of human deeds - and why it is so vital that we try?

The Mind of a Murderer is a fascinating exploration into the psyche of killers, as well as a unique insight into the life and mind of the doctor who treats them. For fans of Unnatural Causes, The Examined Life and All That Remains.

Decent Content

First Off : Listen To The Narration Sample…it’s like that all the way through.

This is my 2nd time getting this as I returned it a while ago due to the narration but I’ve decided to give it a go again at a higher speed playback.

Will update once listened to fully !

Fascinating

After reading The Devil you know by Dr Gwen Adshead, I had been looking for something similar, and this book was perfect. Dr Richard Taylor provides fascinating insights from what I assume to be a remarkable career in forensic psychiatry, I was not disappointed at all.

A must read

This was a beautifully written and often heartbreaking account of the work of the author with patients with broken minds. I couldn’t put it down and would give the author the highest medal for compassion and patience, if there was one.

Fascinating!

Very different to other books in this genre. While some better known cases are referred to, most were new to me and / or personal to the author. An engrossing insight into the minds of both the patients and the forensic psychiatrist.

Excellent.

Excellent audiobook. The author/narrator is engaging and is able to describe cases with enough detail without becoming repetitive. Thoroughly enjoyed.
