About this listen

From award-winning author Julie Berry comes a brand new middle-grade fantasy adventure full of humor and heart, exclusively from Audible.

Maeve Merritt chafes at the rigid rules at her London boarding school for “Upright Young Ladies.” When punishment forces her to sort through the trash, she finds a sardine tin that houses a foul-tempered djinni with no intention of submitting to a schoolgirl as his master.

Soon an orphan boy from the charitable home next door, a mysterious tall man in ginger whiskers, a disgruntled school worker, and a take-no-prisoners business tycoon are in hot pursuit of Maeve and her magical discovery. It’ll take all of her quick thinking and sass to set matters right. Maeve Merritt is one feisty heroine you won’t soon forget.

Julie Berry lives near Los Angeles with her family. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place is an Odyssey Honor Audiobook, and The Passion of Dolssa is a Printz Honor Title.

Unexpected joy

When this appeared as an included book I really wasn’t sure what to expect but it is a fun, fantastical, well-narrated story about a feisty young girl in Victorian times who learns a lot about friendship and family when she finds a very grumpy genie in a rubbish dump. Why was he in the rubbish dump? What will she wish for? What happens when powerful people find out about it? There are all kinds of fun adventures, challenges and mysteries to face. Good fun!

Unexpected and satisfying

I really enjoyed this, lots of drama and adventure. Nicely read, drawing you in to listen longer. I will be introducing my kids as well. But because it was well written I didn’t find it childish. It is one I will listen to again.

Superb

Fantastic story, beautifully read. An author I haven’t come across before so now will make up for lost time by going on to book two.

Rather wonderful

The narration is splendid and evocative. The story also. This would be a really good book to read together with 10-14 yr olds.

What a lucky find

A great book for 8-12 yr olds. My son and I really enjoyed this story and were excited to see that it’s the first in a trilogy. Very atmospheric and engaging. Wonderfully written, with fantastic characters. Would thoroughly recommend

Interesting

Maeve is a headstrong, independent young woman who loves exploring and won’t be told what to do. She learns a lot on her journey of self discovery with friends from different backgrounds & a grumpy hoighty genie. Great fun!

wishes & Wellington's

utterly fantastic, but maybe that's because I've an extremely eclectic taste, horror, scifi, post apocalyptic to childrens books I'm 58.
