About this listen
Nurse Connie Byrne has lived and worked through the Second World War, has celebrated its ending with friends and patients in the East End of London and is now enjoying a fresh new chapter in her life and looking forward to her wedding. But, as many a young bride-to-be has proved, the path of true love never runs smooth....
Connie's busy professional life and the characters who are her patients serve to give her a much-needed sense of perspective. Her work as a nurse in the East End means that she sometimes needs to be tough, ready to face anything - even the nicest of surprises.

An amazing book besides the constant derogatory weight shaming descriptions.
I love all of Jean Fullerton’s books and I think I enjoyed Connie’s escapades as much as Millie’s. However in any & every book Fullerton writes, there are countless really horrible, borderline bully-like, comments whenever she describes a character who is on the larger side. I’m no ‘woke’ type but a country mile but this is so frequent and so noticeable within every single book, that it has me shaking my head. Eg: “….who looked like he’d been re-inflated into a suit several sizes too small” & “….plonked her enormous rump down onto a chair that looked incapable of holding such a weight” - How hateful must a person be towards overweight people, to write such spiteful things about imaginary characters?! I completely understand that it’s an author’s liberty to be as descriptive as physically possible, but Fullerton takes it to a several new heights, especially within this book. It really spoils the experience. Otherwise, a fantastic and entertaining story.

I loved the stories but.....
I loved these series of books and found the trials and hardships depicted to be quite accurate. Having lived in the areas portrayed in the stories all my life, I found it amusing hearing them described as 'the country'. My one complaint is the continuity between Millie's and Connie's stories! I won't spoil it for others, but it's quite a cliff hanger in Millie's book and it just doesn't play out that way in Connie's! Likewise, there seems to have been some editing in the books that has cut out important conclusions to some story lines. Overall, I enjoyed the books and they're worth a listen
