Summary

Rob Paulsen is one of Hollywood's busiest, most talented, and most passionate performers. If you don't know him by name, you will know him by the many characters he has brought to life: Pinky from Pinky and the Brain and Yakko from Animaniacs, the tough but loveable Raphael from the original animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more.

So, you can imagine how terrifying it must have been when Rob was diagnosed with throat cancer, putting his entire livelihood in jeopardy and threatening to rob the world of all his loveable characters that filled our youth and adulthood with humor and delight.

Voice Lessons tells the heartwarming and life-affirming story of Rob's experience with an aggressive cancer treatment and recovery regimen, which luckily led to a full recovery. Rob quickly returned to doing what he loves most, but with a much deeper appreciation of what he came so close to losing. His new lease on life inspired him to rededicate himself to his fans, particularly the new friends he made along the way: hundreds of sick children and their families. Rob said it best himself: "I can not only continue to make a living, but make a difference, and I can't wait to use that on the biggest scale that I can."

A lovely listen!

After listening to Rob’s book, I realised I’ve been listening to him in some form or another for over 30 years and it was both humbling and wonderful to hear him share his life experiences, both professional and personal. His bond with Chad is beautifully woven throughout the book and shows just how much one person can impact your life in ways you can never imagine when you first meet.
As someone who acquired the nickname Pinky at school (due to her then pink hair and penchant for doing voices, with her best friend being The Brain ), it’s fascinating to hear Rob’s stories as to how some of his most famous characters found their voice and beyond lovely to hear him slip in and out of those voices throughout. His journey during the latter years with his cancer is honest and open and so so eloquently read. A truly truly lovely listen and one I’ll return to again and again….Narf!

One of the all time greatest.

Loved every minute of this book, full of honest, well told stories from the life of one of American animation's absolute best. Rob himself narrates the book, giving it not only a more personal and conversational style, but it also means that he slips into his characters where appropriate (And I'm sure he'll agree, inappropriate! :) ) and delivers the read with the same integrity, honesty and passion that he delivered with his Podcast, Talking Toons and he continues to deliver across social media when talking with fans. What I enjoy most about this book isn't just the ins and outs of how he made it in a business that is almost impossible to break into, but his heartfelt recounting of just what his work has meant to others and the affect it's had on him. This book also details the little known period from 2016 on where Rob was diagnosed with Stage 3 Throat Cancer and the intervening years spent re-learning and re-discovering not only his confidence and delivery as an actor and singer, but also how his experiences have made him a better person. I was always a fan from the time I was a small child watching Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (Ninja outside the UK) and have followed his work across animation and the occasional videogame, but it turns out that Rob Paulsen the man himself is even better than the characters that have made people happy for decades.

If you see this Rob, from a fan and as you used to say "friends you haven't met yet" I want to thank you for your body of work and the positivity you continue to allow to define you as a person and as an actor.

For everyone else, please do yourself the favour of picking up this book. As Rob always used to sign off his podcast with; "Laughter is the best medicine and the cool thing is that you can't OD and the refills are free."

Keep the cup topped up full. 😁
