About this listen
The long-awaited memoir from the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Rush bassist, and bestselling author of Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass.
Includes two new songs by Geddy Lee, available exclusively in the My Effin’ Life audiobook.
Geddy Lee is one of rock and roll's most respected bassists. For nearly five decades, his playing and work as co-writer, vocalist and keyboardist has been an essential part of the success story of Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. Here for the first time is his account of life inside and outside the band.
Long before Rush accumulated more consecutive gold and platinum records than any rock band after the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, before the seven Grammy nominations or the countless electrifying live performances across the globe, Geddy Lee was Gershon Eliezer Weinrib, after his grandfather murdered in the Holocaust.
As he recounts the transformation, Lee looks back on his family, in particular his loving parents and their horrific experiences as teenagers during World War II.
He talks candidly about his childhood and the pursuit of music that led him to drop out of high school.
He tracks the history of Rush which, after early struggles, exploded into one of the most beloved bands of all time.
He shares intimate stories of his lifelong friendships with bandmates Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart—deeply mourning Peart’s recent passing—and reveals his obsessions in music and beyond.
This rich brew of honesty, humor, and loss makes for a uniquely poignant memoir.

Excellent performance and interesting life story
obviously I'm biased being a Rush fan who knows all the music but this was a great book which doesn't ever really get too technical about recording, dates or mundane details. the reading by Geddy himself is well recorded and performed and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Rush but even if you just like a good autobiography you wont be disappointed either

Fantastic insight into an amazing life
So brilliant to hear Geddy read this himself. He injects just the right amount of humour into his narration - which I suspect I will miss if I ever read the paper version of this wonderful book.

Great autobiography
Geddy tells the story of his life, in a very candid and reflective way. Really enjoyed and the fact he narrates the audiobook gives it something extra as he is telling you the whole thing over a long weekend talk

Geddys honest and detailed account of his life with Rush
In his own words made it like he was tell me in person... It filled in all the missing gaps of my 40 years plus following of Rush

Time doesn't stand still
Loved Geddys wart's and all style of storytelling, sad and powerful recounting of, what looks like to others, to be a superstar lifestyle but with incredible lows and amazing highs. Rush were( and are)very much part of my life and i look forward to hearing from geddy and Alex in the future, and wish them and they're families happiness for whatever that future holds 🙏

a must for any rock fan
A fascinating look back at his parents humble, and horrific early years and how they overcame their experiences and nurtured a young Geddy. His open, often funny look back at a lifetime as one of music's finest contributers, peppered with sadness was superb. His performance as narrator made it even more enjoyable.
Let's hope for more from Deek

An absolute must for any Rush fan or even if you are slightly aware of them or Geddy Lee!
Best book of my life! Narrated by Geddy himself made it even better which is a great accomplishment. I was in laughter, tears, amazed and terrified during this book. I also got to know basically everything of the holy trinity (Neil, Ged and Alex) I wanted to know. I feel like they are like close friends even I only met them thrice… as a member of audience in Finland! Thank you Geddy! Thank you Rush!
