Summary
Rats are always bigger than you expect. Falco, ancient Rome's hangdog investigator, hates sharing a cell with a rodent - though being bailed by his old mother is almost as embarrassing. His high-born girlfriend can't decide if she wants him, and Titus Caesar's reward for past services is a wet fish. Hoping for a better life, or at least a better apartment, he takes on new clients.
On the elegant slopes of the Pincian Hill, three nouveau riche freedmen with two flashy wives are under siege by a clever redhead. Severina Zotica has a foul-mouthed parrot, an odd connection with a snake dancer - and a very suspicious past. As he pursues this flame-haired fortune-hunter, Falco finds himself beset by violent rentracketeers, poisoners, and women without consciences who have dangerous designs on him.

Devious redhead
As usual an enjoyable trip back to Rome, one which is hardly distinguishable from today, same slick money makers, same slap dash landlords and agents, oh the punishments are different, the threat of being fed to the lions as punishment for murder sounds awful but murders occurred then as now. The title took me a while to connect, very clever :)

Lindsey Davis cracks out another Falco no el
Lindsey Davis is so good with her research that classical students are advised to read her books to understand the true Roman Lifestyle mix this with a good murder mystery and Falco's romance with Helena Justina-Bloody and you have a potent mix

Same format with a good story
The story is as formulaic as the first two, and is a good read. However sometimes it annoys me that the lead character is so gullible with trust, knowingly going into danger and getting hurt. Also that he never takes advantage of options to get rich, turning down the emperor to become middle class etc. If he was really in love, he would take an opportunity to be with her in comfort.

When in Rome
Another happy read. More Rome based than the two novels before, the attraction remains in sorting through the clues within the investigations and the relations and potential relationships along the way. Lindsey Davis is savvy enough to salt her stories to interest many, and once you can accept the status issues of class and men/women the novels bowl along. Short chapters and effective changes of scene all help, and the humour/irony.

An excellent follow on in the series
Really enjoyed the change of location and the challenges the heroes faced.
And Lindsey’s knowledge of Rome and the provinces in the time of Vespasian is excellent.

Poor reading
As entertaining as usual, but the reader really let it down. He didn't have the right light-hearted tone and as a consequence much of the humour was lost.
