About this listen

Jack Campbell returns to the world of the New York Times best-selling Lost Fleet novels with a new action-packed military science fiction series that explores the founding of the Alliance...and the men and women who fought to create it.

Earth is no longer the center of the universe. After the invention of the faster-than-light jump drive, humanity is rapidly establishing new colonies. But the vast distances of space mean that the old order of protection and interstellar law offered by Earth has ceased to exist.

When a nearby world attacks, the new colony of Glenlyon turns to Robert Geary, a young former junior fleet officer, and Mele Darcy, a onetime enlisted marine. With nothing but improvised weapons and a few volunteers, Geary and Darcy must face down warships and armored soldiers - or die trying.

As battles rage and pirates take an increasing toll throughout the colonies, the only hope for lasting peace lies with Carmen Ochoa, a "Red" from the anarchic world of Mars, and Lochan Nakamura, a failed politician. They have a plan: to lay the groundwork for mutual defense that could someday grow into an alliance. But if their efforts don't succeed, the growing power of aggressor worlds could turn regions of space founded on freedom into battlefields between the first interstellar empires.

Confusing

The book flits between two storylines, however the audible version (I don’t know about the book) doesn’t make it clear when it changes. I often found myself confused when a character didn’t act how they should only to realise it had changed to a different character. The story is simple to a fault, but moves at a pace that doesn’t allow you to become bored.

I could not get past the second chapter.

The book is read with the vocal cadence of optimus prime. I can't stand it.

Good story let down by accents

Overall I enjoyed this book, however the accents in the performance were all over the place, and at times completely indeterminable as to where there were meant to be from. The non accented narration was good, but overall it would be better if the accents were not attempted.

Another Winner!

I only have one complaint; the book was not long enough.

That aside, Its another first, I think, for Jack Campbell. It has all the ingredients, as with previous books, and draws you into the storyline almost straightaway.

Can’t wait for the next in the series. A really good, enjoyable listen.

Ideal for children

Just not an adult book. Page turning , simple storyline , and unnecessarily simplistic explanations of each move.

Absolutely mind blowing!!

I'm so grateful to have stumbled across this book!!

This is my first time reading sci-fi/space opera (the genre's may be incorrect) and I didn't think it would be to my taste. I was so wrong!

The characters, the plot, the universe, etc that Campbell has created. All of it will stay with me; from this one book. I wish that I was better with words and could write a review this piece deserves.

I was actually in tears listening to this at some points. Rummel does an OUTSTANDING job of acting out Campbells universe!

How one man can do so many different accents, dialects and voices is incredible to me. You can tell which characters are speaking just by the voice Rummel gives them and they're all so diverse!

Overall this story/performance is one of my absolute favourites, as it stands. I'm so looking forward to investing more into this series. The characters are so well written. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend it to anyone that is interested in sci-fi, space/naval warfare, ships, planet colonisation, politics, etc.

Pretty good.

Nice change of pace from the Black Jack and Syndicate series. Set in the same universe a few hundred years before. Sets the scene pretty well.
