WINNER of the Pulitzer Prize
The Sunday Times Bestseller
Best Books of 2022 pick - New York Times, Obama, TIME, Slate, Oprah Daily, Kirkus, LA Times, EW, Sarah Jessica Parker
Read by a full cast of narrators, Trust by Hernan Diaz is a sweeping, unpredictable novel about power, wealth and truth, set against the backdrop of turbulent 1920s New York. Perfect for fans of Succession.
Can one person change the course of history?
A Wall Street tycoon takes a young woman as his wife. Together they rise to the top in an age of excess and speculation. But now a novelist is threatening to reveal the secrets behind their marriage, and this wealthy man’s story - of greed, love and betrayal - is about to slip from his grasp.
Composed of four competing versions of this deliciously deceptive tale, Trust brings us on a quest for truth while confronting the lies that often live buried in the human heart.
'One of the great puzzle-box novels, it’s the cleverest of conceits, wrapped up in a page-turner' – Telegraph
'Genius' – Lauren Groff, author of Matrix

Really astounding
The only contemporary novel I have read that stands up against classics. Incredibly intricate but the prose moves lightly.
It loops around like something from Borges might but has a natural flow that never feels weighed down. Exceptional on a line level but so complex in its structure that it is hypnotic. There's a deceptive simplicity that is peeled away again and again.
So impressive, really enjoyed it.

Behind Every Great Man...
This is an intriguing intellectual exercise of a novel. As Mildred said: 'the right notes without any sense of rhythm". This is perhaps a little harsh but I did enjoy the book more with my head than my heart. I loved the final section and if history is often written by the survivors I was really pleased to see Mildred's story emerge from the shadows.

Ruined by the ending
After asking us to question the reality behind the stories we are told and the complexities of events and individuals, the ending suddenly reverts to cliché and transforms the subjects into 2 dimensional characters worthy of a bad comic book.

Multi layered fiction
A seemingly simple story that becomes more nuanced with each telling to provide the complexity due it’s subject

Gripping
The first three sections had me gripped. I found the final part unconvincing but don’t want to write more as it would be a plot spoiler.

Trust.. more like truth
I loved the layers and perception of truth this book portrayed. Each main character's viewpoint and the multifaceted portrayal of self, determines how that person is perceived privately by those who are close, versus those who see them publicly.
The power others have in forming how one is perceived publicly, and the legacy of 'truth' it emanates is compelling.
This book makes me question what we think we know of others; how much of their truth has been embellished and distorted by others, or even cultivated by ourselves. It also has me wondering what distorted version of my truth will remain when I die.
Fascinating concept, illustrated beautifully.

Extraordinary story telling.
A book of four books in themselves. The fiction & suggested non fiction are wrapped together to create a picture, which in time, slowly unravels to reveal the real people & events. I’m glad I did this on Audible as I don’t think I would have got on with reading it. But the performances by four talented narrators, encompassing the complex & at times, simple emotions across the book are bought to life in this, thereby making it accessible as a listener. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the writing & the narrative take hold of the listener very early on.

Fascinating, original, beautiful writing and perfect readers
I really REALLY liked this book and it a was beautifully read. I feel the art of reading an audio book is to be so good, you’re not noticed so the words and story speak for themselves and they achieved that.
