Summary
Angus Bjornson only ever wanted to do one thing: to continue crafting exquisite weapons and pieces of armor for his loyal customers. Unfortunately, after one accident too many that leaves the old blacksmith completely disabled, it would seem he has no other choice but to hang up his hammer.
However, that would be underestimating the stubbornness of the self-made man. Fearing he's not going to stop until he ends up dead in his forge, Angus' children offer him a virtual rig that connects to Imperium Games' many universes.
After choosing a fantasy-based world called Alterwelt, Angus - now known as Hephaestus - quickly learns that he can make use of his lifetime of experience by disabling the auto function and playing on manual. His skills allow him to create unique items that beat everything sold on the market. But Hephaestus has a long way to go before he can afford his own in-game forge. Moreover, he only ever learned to work with steel while here he has access to metals as strange and exotic as azuraneum, veridium, orichalcum....

A nice underdog story
A nice underdog story focusing on the crafting aspect of a fantasy realm as opposed to your typical swords and sorcery.
I really enjoyed this and I would have gave it 5 stars, except for the performance. While the performance wasn't bad, the narrator did remind me of an AI text to speech voice, granted I listen to books slightly sped up which may have contributed to this.
All in all I would recommend this book to litrpg fans :)

Proper Crafting!
Absolutely beautiful crafting, probably the best crafting in any book I've read in ages. This is a great story. Honestly I can't wait to get the second book in this series.

What it says in the blurb
Has a high focus on crafting which is nice...
However it's also a extreme OP MC, that somehow is not only one of the worlds greatest blacksmiths, but also a highly trained martial artist.
Henry does a fine job and is good to listen to

An unexpected tale
A story taking and different twist, showing the benefits of advanced technology and how its not the tec that corrupts but the corrupted who corrupt the ideas.

Fairly enjoyable
To begin with, the premise is interesting, and I quite enjoyed the (to my inexpert ears fairly indepth sounding) descriptions of blacksmithing.
Plus there were some other fun aspects, like the in universe quotes about the game.
The pace however, was a bit too slow for me at times. Several plot points that were clearly hinted at, were often also explained at length through dialogue between characters. Which I personally found a bit irritating.
The plot was fine, if a bit predictable at times.
Though I did feel like there were some inconsistencies in how the MC's first in game customer was described before and after one of the first conflicts.
Lastly, the narration was good. With nice pacing, distinct but consistent character voicing, and just sounded pleasant all round.

A good story
This is a nice story and a bit different from the usual VR game as it's not mostly focused on getting stronger and tells a story about the MC trying to find his way to live his dream. There are the cliché antagonist who everyone loves to hate and good side characters. There is a 2nd book but this in itself has an ending that can be concluded.

This book felt like it was made for me
this was easily one of my favourite books, I've had an interest in forging and this book explained details in the characters forging process in a way that was not boring to listen to. and because of that description allowed me to visualise the items he was making vividly.
and the story and moralities that have been addressed has been the the best suprise by far in this book that got me pondering deep questions about virtual spaces and the possibilities.

Nice comfy smiting
old man blacksmith in cliche situations, nice angle and fairly well executed. Mc is a bit op but not too hard to roll with. what concerns me is him being near 100 why do his children sound like they're in their 20s/30s supposedly single? the math doesn't add up there but hopefully that gets highlighted later on. overall I was entertained and the mcs bluntness and kind heart is fitting yet endearing to listen to. Will continue
