Summary
Come round to Louis Theroux’s house where the much-loved TV documentary-maker, podcaster and best-selling author of Gotta Get Theroux This finds himself in unexpected danger....
Like millions of others, Louis’ plans were mothballed by the onset of COVID. Unable to escape to the porn sets, prisons and maximum-security psychiatric units that are his usual journalistic beat, he began reporting on a location even more full of pitfalls and hostile objects of inquiry: his own home during a pandemic.
Theroux the Keyhole is an honest, hilarious and ultimately heartwarming diary of the weirdness of family life in COVID World. A wife intolerant of his obsession with Joe Wicks’ daily workouts. Two teenage sons, inseparable from their videogames, for whom he is increasingly 'cringe'. A five-year-old happily spamming out videos on his own new TikTok account while on holiday with his oblivious family.
Louis also describes how he launches his podcast, Grounded, finally gets to the US to film a new Tiger King documentary and aims his sights on the latest incarnation of the far right in a world becoming radicalised by social media. Theroux the Keyhole is Louis at his insightful best, as he faces unforeseen new challenges and wonders why it took a pandemic for him to learn that what really matters in life is right in front of him.
Read by Louis Theroux, in his usual witty style.

Meh
It's hard to feel for someone in lockdown with lots of money and a big house. He's a borderline alcoholic, the wife pas agg, eldest son vaguely normal, middle son an alt right idiot and the youngest a whiney git.

Ray of light or weird nostalgia
It was great to look back at the weirdness of the pandemic days - through (Theroux?) the eyes of a man who is more articulate, who was equally lost, confused and drunk, but somehow had time to write this.
I bonded with my youngest doing Joe Wicks, so it all sounded very familiar.
Great stuff and thank you for bringing back the memories.

Candid and Human Account of the Pandemic
It’s strange hearing about covid times in a historical context, and the book made me strangely nostalgic for the novelty of it all.
I was gripped for the first 2/3, but felt like the pacing slowed down quite abruptly at the end. This does not detract from the raw experience documented by Louis here, written in an entertaining and eloquent way that is a joy to listen to.

The most relatable book I've 'read'
I already love Louis Theroux but I think I love him even more now. An extremely relatable, honest, funny, thought provoking diary of his lockdown life, juggling work, home life, relationships, home schooling, parenting. Having had 4 kids at home during lockdown ranging from 1-14, 3 of which were home schooling, plus a husband working at home too, I was driven insane. Louis has made me feel, oh it wasn't just me then.
I particularly liked his use of language and sentence structures to express, explain and provide a picture in my mind of what was going on in his world.
Louis has such a gentle voice and manor and a particular way with people where he comes across to me as non judgemental and unshocked by the behaviour of others, rendering those he's interviewing to trust and open up. I think that's why his documentaries appeal so much to me. I loved his openness in this book. He isn't afraid to say I'm not perfect, admits his struggles and fallibility. I found the detail around his work processes interesting too.
I can't really imagine anyone not enjoying this book.

Just fantastic
A brilliant, honest and vulnerable look into how lockdown impacted us in 2020. Theroux almost carries a prophetic air throughout his entires whilst keeping us “grounded” through mentions of Joe Wicks and Jamie Oliver meals. His discussions of his family life- the difficulty raising three boys of varying ages and a marriage put under strain by both his own actions and unimaginable circumstances make him vulnerable in the best way. If I could give it more stars I would.

Close to home, brings back memories
Close to home, brings back memories while remaining insightful, honest and amusing.
Always enjoyed his writing and his TV shows, as well as the amusing titles.
This made me relive some painful times of 2020, but fortunately out of my own experiences somewhat, with a wider scope and looking in on another family. It's always a relief to see that everyone else coped just about as well/badly as you did, with our National Lockdowns, so many of the same problems and worries.
Even Louis Theroux. With diary entries dating back to the start of the pandemic, a TV producer and filmmaker's COVID year is honestly portrayed, by the author himself on Audible, for the world to see.
Family life, his marriage, increased drinking, the stresses imposed on his work, it's all familiar but distant, and Louis gives us his own personal lockdown.
He never fails to amuse with his dry wit, but you can also read in there the pain, worry, boredom, fear and occasional triumphs of the year that kind-of wasn't.
I did enjoy seeing the Joe Wicks links, as someone who took part at the time and knew Louis was named by Joe in the workouts, funny to see his side of the experience. His work with Tiger King is highlighted for this period, he does manage to find himself well-timed with these things. Somehow Jimmy Saville is also mentioned. Again.
Hard in some ways to relive that year, but also there is distance now of a sorts, pre vaccination, and it's almost a different era, of shortages and daily briefings, policing neighbours and never-ending home schooling.
Loved the narrator, Louis's dry voice reading out his diaries, and the content was amusing and heartfelt combined.
With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.
