About this listen
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More by Roald Dahl, read by Andrew Scott.
Roald Dahl turns his pen to anything, twisting everyday life into powerful, and sometimes terrifying fantasies. Seven superb stories, full of Roald Dahl's usual magic, mystery and suspense: meet the boy who can talk to animals, the man who can see with his eyes closed, and find out about the treasure, buried deep underground on Thistley Green.

Utterly joyful
A. Scott does such a wonderful performance in every story that it saddens me there is not a greater wealth of audiobooks with him as the narrator. In terms of the narrative, the stories themselves are (nearly) all totally wonderful, though Dahl exhibits a strange tendency for endings that do not quite match the rest of the narrative (in 2 of the 7), and one story seems to build a scene and then finish.
Saying that, this is the best performed audiobook I've come across, so any issues I may have had with the stories was overcome

One of my favourite books of all time, but...
... the narrator really wasn't suitable. Partly it's because Andrew Scott's voice is so distinctive that I felt like Moriarty was reading me a story (for those who don't get the reference, he played Moriarty in the BBC TV series, Sherlock). But mainly it's for two reasons. Firstly, he's Irish, and Roald Dahl was very much English despite his Norwegian heritage. As the stories are all written as reality, even the fictional ones, and are meant to be narrated by Dahl himself, this sounded weird. Secondly, despite the energetic voices he can clearly do when voicing characters, his narration is just as I imagine an Irish Eeyore reading a eulogy at a funeral would sound like.
I've still given it five stars, as it's the only audio recording of the book and the stories are incredible, but the performance gets a - possibly generous - two stars.

Enjoyable but not top class Dahl
If you could sum up The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More in three words, what would they be?
Amusing, magical, slight
Would you recommend The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More to your friends? Why or why not?
If you enjoy Dahl you will certainly enjoy this book though it is not in the same class as his best works (Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG etc)
Have you listened to any of Andrew Scott’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I have never come across audiobooks in which he features but am familiar with him from television. His performance here is excellent.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There is a good range of stories from the autobiographical to the magical. What makes this book worth listening to is the excellent narrator.

Roald is missed
My inner child loves his stories. Written to inform us all that fantasy is and was our history. Reality isn’t easy without the past. We’d all be wondering and wandering how to get from A to B. Enough pomp and ceremony exists for all of us humans. A glass of water or Adam’s Wine - the same thing, Entertainment matters.

I AM WOWED 👍🏻
Every thing in this book is amazing. The only downside is that when the black man ( in The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar ) starts to tell his life story. I think it is simply too long of a story.
I recommend this book for children aged 5/6-12 .

Wonderful
Other than the obvious children's classics I knew very little about Roald Dahl, I was completely absorbed. I was thoroughly entertained, the stories were wonderful and I thought the narration was perfect.
