Critic reviews

"[Narrator Stephen] Fry gives Max a perfect plummy voice and has equal fun with colorful supporting characters and ne'er-do-wells. His lovely mix of realistic conversation and pacing, as well as the occasional slow wink, encourages listeners to succumb in pleasure." ( AudioFile)

Like Agather Christie read by Fry. Brill.

Well worth a listen. Might be a little on the ordinary side if not so well acted by Fry.

Excellent Stories

I had heard of Ernest Bramah, but am embarrassed to say I’d reached the age of 57 without reading any of his books

Stephen Fry’s was an excellent introduction to some very good stories, detective stories rather than whodunnits. The hero Max Carrados, to those like me are unfamiliar with the author, is a blind man with an almost supernatural faculty for interpreting sound, touch and smell. But, unlike the superhero Daredevil, this conceit isn’t taken too far and is quite believable. As believable as any amateur sleuth from the Golden Age of crime stories.

I intend getting more of Mr Branagh’s books. One of the advantages of finding a ‘new’ author is exploring the back catalogue.

Stephen Fry amazing

You could almost become disinterested in the stories because the narration is just excellent. The different voices and accents bring characters alive. The stories themselves are just as could as Sherlock Holmes and as they are from the same era you could interchange the two. I am not sure if they ever made them for film or TV but they would make a good series..

I'm sure it would be an excellent read in book for

I struggled with the narration of the book and I don't think Mr Fry really did it justice. In fact I'm not overly keen on any of his narration, I find it very flat and unimpassioned and on this occasion really killed it.

Lighthearted contemporary to Sherlock Holmes

A good collection of short stories, in the Holmes mould but enjoyably different. Some really pleasing characterisation with moments of humour which break up the tales nicely. Performance by Stephen Fry is typically engaging.

Entertaining and Well Read

An entertaining and well read set of stories - I'd highly recommend listening to one of the contemporary rivals of Sherlock Holmes!!
