About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Strings of Murder by Oscar de Muriel, read by Andy Secombe, including musical interludes recorded by the author himself.

Edinburgh, 1888. A virtuoso violinist is brutally killed in his home. But with no way in or out of the locked practice room, the murder makes no sense. Fearing a national panic over a copycat Ripper, Scotland Yard sends Inspector Ian Frey to investigate under the cover of a fake department specializing in the occult.

However, Frey's new boss, Detective Nine-Nails McGray, actually believes in such nonsense.

McGray's tragic past has driven him to superstition, but even Frey must admit this case seems beyond reason. And once someone loses all reason, who knows what they will lose next...

Loved This

Great book and narration! Enough twist to keep you guessing and enough clues to keep you interested. This has it all gruesome mystery, humor and action. Loved all the characters in addition to the two main characters, the maid Joan was highly entertaining.

Enjoyable, wonderfully gruesome

The contrast between the main protagonists McGrey and Frey is as curious as Holmes and Watson. One a stuffy Scotland Yard detective another a superstitious, grimy local senior police officer. Using music was a brilliant idea to tie the maccabre altogether. While it definitely feels like part of a series, it's still a good start.

Highly enjoyable

I hope there are many more romps through Victorian Edinburgh. The characters are sharp and likeable the fact that they struggle to be in the same room such is their dislike of each other just adds to the fun

Performance Was Wonderful

Unusual story, I loved the narration and music although I felt it took me a little while to become engrossed in the story, once I did I couldn’t stop listening. I’m probably going to listen to the next in the series too if just for the wonderful way the story was read by the actor.

Excellent story telling and characterisation.

The presentation had an excellent range of atmospher. From deathly dark to humorous asides. Wonderful tale wonderfully narrated.

Nice accents, shame about the protagonist

Not a bad book, a unique and interesting plot idea which moves along at a reasonable pace unfortunately burdened with a set of fairly thin yet equally uninteresting characters. The foppish lead is certainly part of the joke but it's a joke that wears rather thin and doesn't develop from the earliest pages to the last.

The performance is generally very solid and despite some sections where the characters voices wobble a little I shall certainly look for other readings by the same actor. I suspect the variations have more to do with production and different readings than the actors ability.

Tuned in

Two lead characters quite different but charming in their own way - one pompous and the other a bit different but they nicely compliment. The story is a bit reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel and, on occasion, a little Belgium detective. I enjoyed it and would recommend for a 'nice' detective story.

Hooked

Before the story was a quarter way through I was hoping there would be a series with the two detectives, who genuinely had me laughing out loud at times. Look forward to reading the next one.
