About this listen

The second novel in Wilbur Smith's The Courtneys series, The Sound of Thunder is a powerful story of family tragedy set against the backdrop of the ravages of the Second Boer War.

'Only once in his life had Sean met a man whose strength matched his own - and now, again, they were pitted against each other....'

Sean Courtney, impulsive adventurer of When the Lion Feeds, returns from the wilderness a rich man - until he is robbed by the Boers of his wagons, his gold and the girl he loves. A grim homecoming finds his country in the cruel grip of war. But in the bloody days ahead, conflicts within his family will prove far more bitter than any fought on the veld....

Top Drawer

Lost count of how many times I’ve read this book and the others in the Courtney Trilogy, it’s a lot. Sean Barret’s narration is superb. Really brings it to life.

Excellent story woven into South African history.

Read the book 50 years ago and enjoyed having it read to me. Descriptions of the velt, mountains and koppies made my feet itch to walk them again.

Action page turner .

Brilliant story , excllent narrator and a good length of audio book .
A little disconcerting at first as narrator has done other good books
with a horror element but never the less excellent once you are enveloped in story .

Great Story telling

I’ve been a follower for years and find its nice to listen to a WS edition with the history and suspense.
Glad there’s not as much soft porn in this one

The sound of Thunder

Amazing book, highly recommended. This was an excellent sequel to A Lion Feeds, smooth flowing and without repetition. An absorbing story that draws you in from the beginning with characters that you love and hate as if you're actually there with them. Great Job!

Enjoyed it a lot more than book 1

Whatever else is said, you get value for money with W Smith and the Courtneys. So many different story lines all wrapped into one book.
