Summary
The inner conflicts of a mismatched band of mercenaries threatens to derail an important mission in Wilbur Smith's dramatic adventure novel, The Dark of the Sun, set during the Congo Crisis.
'The bend in the road rushed towards them, just a few more seconds. Then, with a succession of jarring crashes that shook the whole body of the car, a burst of fire hit them from behind. The windscreen starred into a sheet of opaque diamond lacework, the dashboard clock exploded powdering Shermaine's hair with particles of glass, two bullets tore through the seat ripping out the stuffing like the entrails of a wounded animal.'
Bruce Curry is the leader of a mercenary band with the dubious support of three white officers. His mission is to relieve a mining town cut off by the fighting and to retrieve a priceless consignment of diamonds. Ranged against his ill-disciplined unit are bandits, guerrillas and hostile tribes that roam the land. But there is another, even deadlier enemy - one of his own men....

Gripping vintage story
Typical of its vintage, the male female roles very distinct. Loved the accents. Loved the characters. A perfect Wilbur.

Not his finest
A weak story line I prefer Wilber Smith's earlier books, also the reader wasn't the best for this kind of story line.

Great, classic entertainment
Really enjoyed this production. The story is simple and linear but so very well written. Historically accurate with an eye for detilail that can only be aquired with first hand knowledge. Yes, its violent, brutal and misogynistic but thats what makes it so very satisfying. No pandering to politcal correctness or tokenism, its just a rip roaring adventure written about men for men. The narrator was excellent, really made the charectors come alive and his accents were first class. It really makes you wonder if stuff like this will ever be written again, personally i doubt it but who cares, it doesn't get any better!

not all soldiers are honourable
a good Sunday afternoon yarn. Wally was as peedictable as anything, a very typical blood thirsty mercenary without conscience. Bruce was aware of Wally's failings but still thought there was some honour in him, that was Bruce's failings.

Awesome book, but this reader has no reading skill
Reader hypes and emphasises at the most terrible places. Flicking a cigarette into the the floor gets the same emphasis as murder of the lead character. Just horrible reading.

The film version of this book moved me.
It was one of those strange coincidences, I saw a film when about 15yrs called, The Mercenaries, it was so powerful and violently impactful, I never forgot it. The a month ir so ago I bought another of Mr Smith's books, having been bowled over by Elephant Song, imagine my delight to realise it was the book that inspired the film. the book proved equal to its alternate version. Well done, another insightful, description of Africa's darker side.
